Anyone that has ever been to Disney World (or Disneyland) knows that it truly is the “happiest place on earth.” Everywhere you look more fun, adventure, and perfection awaits… but with so much going on to delight your senses it’s easy to miss the many secrets surrounding the theme park. Here are 17 fun facts and secrets about Disney World–some of which can really pay off! Plus, grant you the opportunity to show off to friends, and family the next time you visit the park. 1. What’s That Smell? At Disney World, you can’t help but be happy. The whole place is set up like a fantasy land, including plenty of friendly faces, fully costumed characters, and there is even a smell that can only be found here. Not one thing goes unplanned around here, not even the scents in the air. On Main Street, and many other parts of the park, “smellitizers” are set to go off every so often, releasing the scent of vanilla or freshly baked cookies. 2. Sleep Like A Princess In Cinderella’s Castle Cinderella’s Castle was built in 2006, it is located within the theme park and is so splendid you can’t even book a night there. To sleep in this royal room you have to win a contest hosted by Disney. 3. Develop A Fear For Aladdin's Spitting Camel The Magic Carpets of Aladdin features a camel that spits water at passing park-goers. Many are fooled into thinking this electronic machine just has great aim, think again. There is actually someone paid to sit nearby the camel and operate it when the operator thinks they can hit passing guests they command the camel to spit. 4. Secret Trick To Getting On Your Next Ride Without Waiting In Line When you venture to Tom Sawyer’s Island take a careful look through the attraction if you see a paintbrush you want to grab it! Then, find the nearest park employee and hand over the paintbrush in order to receive free fast passes for one ride. Considering many rides have lines 2 and 3 hours long, this could be beneficial to your entire day! 5. Disney Is Rather Presidential There are 3 places in the United States where you can find a Presidential Seal. One is the Oval Office, another in the hall of the Liberty Bell, and the third is located right in Disney World’s Hall of Presidents. 6. Installing the Presidential Seal in the Hall of Presidents required a literal act of Congress. Plus, it's the only place the carpet seal exists other than the White House and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. 7. Order The Secret Menu Item At “Be Our Guest” When visiting the Be Our Guest Restaurant, modeled after Beauty and the Beast, ask your waiter or waitress for “the grey stuff” (a reference from the famous “Be Our Guest” song) in order to try the secret item on the menu. 8. One Big Bus Disney keeps the busses moving all day long, transporting park visitors to and from the park. The transportation system is actually the 3rd largest bus system in all of Florida! 9. 2 Planes For The Price Of One The Jungle Cruise ride features the back-half of a crashed plane. The front-half from this same plane is featured in the Casablanca portion of the Great Movie Ride. 10. Where’s The Gum At? If you want to chew gum at the park, make sure to bring your own! Not because it’s over-priced, but because Disney World does not offer any gum for sale. This helps prevent visitors from stepping on gum around the park or on rides. 11. Disney’s Telling Artwork I still remember when Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was open at the park, today it has been turned into The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh ride. If you look carefully at the artwork found throughout the ride you will see a picture of Mr. Toad handing Owl the deed to the attraction. 12. RIP Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride In honor of Mr. Toad handing his ride over to Owl, a tombstone was placed at The Haunted Mansion’s graveyard. 13. Navigate The Park Like A Pro Employees and cast members that work at Disney World don’t travel the same jam-packed streets as you and me, instead, they use an underground tunnel system referred to as the Magic Kingdom Tunnel. 14. Water Wiz Using 5.7 million gallons of water, the Seas Aquarium offers the second largest aquarium in all of the US. 15. Secret Apartment on Main Street When walking down Main Street, look for the USA firehouse, just above this location sits a secret apartment. While Disneyland was being built in the early 1950s, Walt built this apartment for his family. A lamp lit in the window let staff know anytime he was there, and now it's always alight in his honor. 16. Secretly Shallow Waters Despite its deep appearance, the lake that hosts the Fantasmic attraction is only 1 foot deep. 17. How Many Mickey Faces Can You Find? All throughout Disney World, there are references to Mickey in unexpected places. No matter how many times you frequent the place, you are sure to find a new Mickey! 18. Venture the Captain’s Quarters When aboard the Mark Twain River Boat ride, ask the pilot if you can visit the captain’s room. This is a secret code that will grant you access to the room the ship is piloted out of. 19. Besides the one atop the central flagpole, the American flags on Main Street USA aren't real American flags. That way, the park doesn't need to lower or light them at night. Every small flag on top of most of the buildings that run down Main Street USA has one less star and one less stripe which make them not American Flags. Additionally, every flagpole that holds each flag is actually a lightning rod. So when lightning strikes it doesn't harm the American Flags and when an important person dies, they don't have to lower all the Flags to the half mast! 20. Disney employees occasionally catch people scattering the ashes of loved ones around various rides and attractions, including the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. 💀 21. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride has a real skull. Rumor has it that when the ride was built in 1967, Imagineers weren't happy with the inauthentic appearance of the fake skeletons they were using. So the UCLA medical school gladly provided cadaver skeletons, which were positioned throughout the ride. Over time, they were replaced with the dummies we see today — except for one skull, which remains above this headboard. 22. There's more to Matterhorn than meets the eye: In fact, the mountain contains a small basketball court near the top where employees can hang out. 23. The place packs some serious firepower. Disney World purchases the second highest amount of explosives in the U.S. The biggest buyer? The U.S. Military. (We're going to assume that's for their multiple-times-a-day firework displays and not the security staff.) 24.
