Even though we were first introduced to these guys back in 1984, to this day we still know that if there's something strange in the neighborhood we're gonna call...the Ghostbusters! The film starred a cast of comedy legends and created one of the most successful franchises in history. From there, we were met with television shows, video games, merchandise and a sequel. (And perhaps a third outing one of these days...) But until then, let's take a look at the cast of Ghostbusters then and now. 1. BILL MURRAY (DR. PETER VENKMAN) Dr. Peter Venkman has doctorate degrees in psychology and parapsychology, although refers to any paranormal-like activity as “implied science.” He spends most of his time and research flirting with female subjects and doesn’t take anything too seriously. That is until he has a real-life ghost encounter. After that, he joins in his colleague’s enthusiasm for all things paranormal, leading the investigation when his love interests’ house appears to be displaying paranormal activity. Bill Murray is everyone’s favorite funny man, and he’s still making audiences laugh today. Since the success of Ghostbusters, Murray has appeared in films such as St. Vincent (2014), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Aloha (2015) and Rock the Kasbah (2015). He also appeared himself in Zombieland (2009). Now 65-years-old, Murray will voice Baloo in the much anticipated, live-action version of Disney’s The Jungle Book this year, and he is also slated to appear in the new Ghostbusters film. 2. ANNIE POTTS (JANINE MELNITZ) Janine Melnitz is a cynical, sassy receptionist for the Ghostbusters organization, and plays a love interest in the first film for Dr. Egon Spengler. She’s a humorous character that wears large, black rimmed circular glasses and has short, red hair. One of the most notable qualities of the character is her nasally voice. Annie Potts is an American actress who has appeared in films such as Pretty in Pink (1986) and in the Toy Story films as the voice of Bo Peep. She is also slated for voice work in the upcoming Toy Story 4 film set to release in 2018. She will appear in a 9/11 drama this year titled Two for One, and will also appear in the new Ghostbusters film this summer. 3. HAROLD RAMIS (DR. EGON SPENGLER) The brains behind the Ghostbusters operation, Egon is a master of electronics. He developed the containment system used to store the ghosts the team capture,s as well as the infamous proton packs that the team uses to grab the ghosts. He looks at everything like a scientist, driven by a quest for knowledge. Harold Ramis was a writer, actor, director and producer with quite the track record. He acted in films such as Knocked Up (2007) and Year One (a 2009 film he also directed) but was a behind-the-scenes force in films such as Groundhog Day (1993), Caddyshack (1980) and Animal House (1978). And for fans of The Office (2006-2010), Ramis directed four episodes. He even had a hand in writing the upcoming Ghostbusters characters. Unfortunately, his life ended much too soon. On February 24, 2014 at 69 years old, Ramis succumbed to an autoimmune disease. 4. SIGOURNEY WEAVER (DANA BARRETT) A single woman living in an apartment on her own, Dana Barrett is just fine on her own until strange goings-on begins taking over her home. She is forced to call the only person she believes can help her – a flirtatious parapsychologist and his team of ghost-hunting colleagues. Sigourney Weaver, iconic for her role as Ripley in the Alien franchise, appeared in both Ghostbusters films and will also appear in the new film hitting theaters later this year. Following the success of the original film, Weaver found herself landing upon yet another giant movie: Avatar (2009), which has sparked three sequels of its own, projected for release in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively – all of which Weaver is slated to appear in, though there are no details, yet. Her latest major role came in last year’s Chappie. 5. RICK MORANIS (LOUIS TULLY) Louis Tully is the short, geeky, socially awkward neighbor of Dana Barrett who continually attempts to invite her over, each time to no avail. Unfortunately for Tully, he ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong time, dragging him into the paranormal activity that Dana has been experiencing and landing him at Ghostbusters headquarters. Rick Moranis is best known for his role as Wayne Szalinski in Disney’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), though he’s also appeared in the cast of The Flintstones (1994), the Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs (1987) and did voice work in another Disney film, Brother Bear (2003). The now 62-year-old actor doesn’t consider himself to be retired, although his last feature film was released in 2003. After his wife died of cancer in 1991, he put his children before the camera, a decision he’s confident in. Unfortunately for fans, this also means he will not be appearing in the new Ghostbusters film. 6. DAVID MARGULIES (MAYOR LENNY) Though only a small part was cast in the film, the Mayor of New York in Ghostbusters is a satirical representation of politicians. He bails the Ghostbuster team out of jail in order to save the city from the ghosts that a firehouse explosion released upon it. How was he able to make such a difficult decision? Peter Venkman’s argument that he would get re-elected if the team were able to do their job and stop the threat. The Mayor in the film is played by American actor David Margulies. Margulies also appeared in films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) and All Good Things (2010) and he also appeared on the TV show, The Sopranos (2000-2007) as Neil Mink. Margulies will appear in a film titled License Plates set to release this year and was in the midst of filming TV movie, Madoff (also set to release this year) when tragedy struck. He died on January 11, 2016 at 78-years-old. 7. ERNIE HUDSON (WINSTON ZEDDMORE) Due to increased paranormal activity, the Ghostbusters needed more help and put out a wanted ad. They received one applicant and hired him on the spot. Winston Zeddmore is the only Ghostbuster cast member that didn’t found the company, though he’s valuable to the team in his dedication and willingness to “believe anything” so long as he’s receiving a steady paycheck. Ernie Hudson is still acting today, in both film and TV. The now 70-year-old actor has appeared on television shows such as Modern Family, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and has acted in films such as Miss Congeniality (2000) and You’re Not You (2014). He is also set to appear in the new Ghostbusters film. 8. WILLIAM ATHERTON (WALTER PECK) Walter Peck is one of the film’s antagonists as an inspector for the Environmental Protection Agency that is attempting to shut down the Ghostbusters’ operation. He’s responsible for their arrest in the first film. Unfortunately for him, Peter Venkman is a smooth-talking guy, and after one meeting with the Mayor, he earns the Ghostbusters their freedom and gets Peck fired at the same time. William Atherton is still acting today, having just released a film this year titled Lowlifes. He has appeared on television shows such as Lost, Castle, and Workaholics and is best known for his film roles in Die Hard (1988) and The Last Samurai (2003). 9. DAN AYKROYD (DR. RAYMOND STANTZ) (my favorite cast member) The last Ghostbuster cast member, Dr. Raymond Stantz (loving known by his colleagues as Ray) is passionate about his work. He often has a child-like enthusiasm when it comes to paranormal activity and is responsible for helping develop the Ghostbusters technology. He’s also the cause of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man massacre that overtakes New York. Dan Aykroyd is a writer, director, actor, and producer. He directed 1991’s Nothing But Trouble wrote films such as The Blues Brothers (1980) and is working as an executive producer on the upcoming Ghostbusters film. He has also acted in such hits as The Campaign (2012), 50 First Dates (2004), Pearl Harbor (2001), and Driving Miss Daisy (1989). There have been countless others as well, and fans can expect to see him acting in the upcoming Ghostbusters film as well. When not acting, Aykroyd keeps busy promoting Crystal Head Vodka, which he founded in 2008. 10. IVAN REITMAN (DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, AND VOICE OF ZUUL/SLIMER) There is no Reitman, only Zuul. Kind of. Though uncredited for his voice work in the film, director/producer Ivan Reitman put a voice to the lovable green glob and the evil entity known to all as Zuul, two characters that would become iconic in the film industry and become fan favorites. Reitman has since directed Ghostbusters II (1989), No Strings Attached (2011) and Draft Day (2014), just to name a few, but it’s the production teams he’s been behind that has really earned him a name for himself. His name is on some large films, including I Love You, Man (2009), Up In The Air (the 2009 Socar nominee that was directed by his son, Jason Reitman), the newest Ghostbusters film as well as the upcoming Baywatch film set to release next year.
