When it comes to old school etiquette and manners, kids these days just don't know all of the rules. There are so many basic rules that people should follow to be polite, but not many do. When someone asked on Reddit, "What is a basic rule of etiquette that everyone should know, but not everyone follows?", thousands jumped in to answer. This question went viral and many people shared basic rules of etiquette. Here is a round-up of some of the best, most obvious etiquette rules. Which ones do you always follow and which ones did you forget about completely? 1. There are rules on elevators, trains, and other places where people get on and off Let other people get off before you get on. This works for elevators, train platforms, busses, and other places where people are getting on and off around the same time. Many people rush on and it is just plain rude! 2. Use your listening skills These days, most people barely listen to each other. They are just thinking about what they'd like to say or are interrupting. Make sure to listen to someone and listen fully before you intend to reply. 3. Walk in pairs on the sidewalk Have you ever been walking and a group of people take up the entire sidewalk and don't move over when you walk by? So rude, right? The rule is that you should walk in pairs so there is enough room for people to walk both ways on the sidewalk. 4. Use headphones in public places Never play music at a coffee shop, library, on a bus, or any public place. Just use headphones and keep the music low. No one else really wants to listen to your music or whatever you're watching or listening to. 5. There are many cell phone etiquette rules If someone shows you a photo, just look. Don't touch their phone or swipe through their photos. You never know what you might see! You also shouldn't give out someone's phone number without them giving you permission first. Don't touch Just like you shouldn't touch someone's phone or other belongings without permission, you shouldn't touch anyone without their permission. Even if you're okay with random hugs, other people may not be! 7. Don't cause a scene If you are having a problem at a store or with a company, try to keep calm. It likely isn't the customer service person's fault. Speak firm, but polite. We guarantee you will get your way much faster that way. 8. Don't forget bathroom etiquette Public bathrooms are just that... public. Many people have to use them all day. People have to clean them. If you make a mess, clean it up. Wash your hands after using the bathroom. Just treat it as you would your own bathroom that you would have to clean. Also, just don't talk on your phone while you're in a bathroom stall. 9. Be a good houseguest If you stay at someone's house, even if it is just for dinner, make sure to help clean the dishes or help with other chores. There are driving rules too Never text or talk on the phone while driving. You need to be alert at all times, even at red lights! So annoying! As gross as it can be, you have to pick up your dog's poop when you are in a public place. 12. Cover your mouth! If you cough or sneeze, make sure you cover your mouth. This is pretty obvious, but a lot of people don't do it these days! 13. When you meet someone or say hello... If you are sitting down and someone comes in, stand up to shake their hand or say hello. 14. Put your phone down If someone is talking to you, put your phone down. It is so rude to talk, text, or play on your phone while someone is trying to talk to you. 15. Grocery store etiquette When you're in line, make sure to put the divider down if there is one. This is just polite to the person behind you. When you go to pay, hand your cashier the cash and don't throw it on the counter.
