The 1980s are remembered for a lot of things, but one of the infamous things about the decade was the awful fashion. Whether you loved it or you hate it no one can deny it, the 80s has one of the most talked about fashion, paving the way for designers around the world. The 80s were a bold time, but these 15 terrible 80s men’s fashion trends should have never happened, some even making it into today’s fashion world. These 15 men’s fashion from the 1980s will surely make you cringe. 1. Members Only Jackets No one knew what it meant, but if you were anyone and if you had the jacket, you were a member. Along with their enduring ad campaign quote, “When you put it on…something happens,” you just had to have one of these jackets. One thing is for certain, Members Only was at center stage of the 80s, but luckily, the Members Only club has been closed. 2. Acid Washed Jeans Just like pegged jeans, Members Only jackets, and popped collars, if you had acid washed jeans, you were cool. Luckily, the fad didn’t last long during the 80s, dying out within a couple of years. Unluckily, acid washed jeans are making a comeback today. It almost seems like people who didn’t experience the 80s somehow miss the fashion. 3. Headbands Headbands became a fashion statement. It didn’t matter where you were, what you were doing, or what you were wearing — a headband would make your outfit complete. During the early 80s, workout clothes became an everyday clothing item, but once that died out into the mid-80s, the headband didn’t go with it. Many rock stars would wear it for looks and to keep their long locks out of their faces. Thankfully, headbands are now almost exclusively worn just by athletes. 4. Popped Collars If you popped your collar during the 80s you were either preppy, rebellious, cool, or a douchebag — most of the time, all of the above. While it made a brief comeback amongst frat boys who get drunk and yell “my dad is a lawyer” every time they get busted for something, the popped collar has remained dead. 5. Abstract Shirts Like most things of the 80s, no one really knows how abstract shirts came to be popular. It just…happened. Abstract shirts also managed to somehow survive throughout the early 90s until everyone realized they looked like a terrible music video. 6. Miami Vice Suits If any man you encountered during the 80s watched Miami Vice, chances are they dressed like Don Johnson at some point, or at least wanted to. Throughout the mid-to-late 80s, and even into the early 90s, Don Johnson set the trend for a t-shirt under pastel suits, no socks, rolled up sleeves, and Ray-Ban Wayfarers. The style died out during the early 1990s, but Miami Vice had influenced a whole generation of wannabe cool detectives. 7. Sweaters Draped Over Your Shoulders If you think a popped collar made you look like a preppy idiot, try a sweater draped over your shoulders. Just don’t try both at the same time or you might go blind looking in the mirror. This look pretty much screams that you’re the bad guy in a movie who is going to challenge the hero to a downhill skiing competition at his dad’s resort. 8. Fanny Packs Fanny packs are like roaches — nobody seems to like them, but they just won’t die. Since their rise to prominence during the 1980s, the fanny pack hasn’t really gone away since, even making a brief comeback in some circles as recently as the 2000s. 9. Neon Anything The 80s were a very bright time! Without any warning really, the 80s were all about neon colors for anything and everything. It was like a world full of bicyclists who didn’t want to get hit by cars at night. Thankfully, once the 90s came rolling around, the neon colors of the 80s stayed in the past. 10. Parachute Pants The 80s was a decade of testing out fashion and seeing how cool or ridiculous you could look. Parachute pants definitely made you look ridiculous. Parachute pants were especially common with the break-dancing crowd, making break-dancers stand out more. 11. Shell Suit At some point during the 80s, shell suits became popular and completely took off with the hip-hop scene and break-dancers. Shell suits came in various colors, the crazier, the better. Shell suits made it through the 80s and even survived through the early 90s before people decided it was time to hang it up (good call). In 2012, the shell suit was voted the worst fashion item of the past 50 years — probably a good thing this trend died down. 12. The Male Crop Top It wasn’t the worst thing to come out of the 80s, but it was close. During the 80s, walking past a boy wearing a crop top wasn’t unusual, but after the 80s, the boy crop top fade had died down. Somehow in recent years, the crop top for men seems to be making a strong comeback. Thanks a lot, hipsters. 13. Pegged Jeans It seemed that during the 80s, the 50s came back into style with pegged jeans. Pegged jeans have become more common in recent years, though hopefully, they’ll never be as popular as they were in the 80s. 14. Mullets The mullet was a classic hairstyle to rock during the 1980s. Rock stars, actors, the cool kids at school, and probably, some of your parents had it. Business in the front and party in the back, mullets were seen as something that was stylish, makes you stand out from the losers, and it showed you knew how to have fun. Today, mullets have gone extinct. If you happen to see a person with the hairdo, you would probably need to take a picture, since no one will believe the hairstyle is still around. Today, if anyone goes through their old photo albums and notices the mullet, they would probably cringe at the sight. 15. Shoulder Pads Sad to say, but not every guy looks good in shoulder pads.
