Oscar gold doesn't get old. From the red carpet arrivals to the last envelope opening, the Oscars never fail to deliver glitz, glamour, and a whole lot of drama. These Academy Awards moments were some of the most unforgettable. 1.1940 Gone With the Wind took home eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel). Hattie was the first African American actor to win an Academy Award. 2. 1941 Ginger Rogers got a congratulatory kiss from her mother Lela after winning the Best Actress Oscar for Kitty Foyle. She beat out Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, Katharine Hepburn, and Martha Scott for the award. 3. 1942 Gary Cooper, Joan Fontaine, Mary Astor, and Donald Crisp took home the acting awards. Joan beat out her own sister, Olivia de Havilland, for the Best Actress award. Donald, along with many other men, wore military uniforms to the ceremony because it was the first Oscars held after the U.S. entered WWII. 4. 1943 Mickey Rooney and his mother, Nellie Carter, chatted up Best Actor nominee Walter Pidgeon while sitting in the audience in the Coconut Grove at The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Walter was nominated for his role in Mrs. Miniver (which took home six Oscars) but he lost to James Cagney. 5. 1944 Casablanca won Best Picture and the acting awards went to Paul Lucas, Jennifer Jones, Katina Paxinou, and Charles Coburn. The ceremony took place in Grauman's Chinese Theatre and was broadcast to the troops overseas. 6. 1945 Ingrid Bergman, Barry Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby took photos together after winning for Going My Way (Bing and Barry) and Gaslight (Ingrid). Going My Way nabbed seven major Oscars that night including Best Picture and Best Director (Leo McCarey). 7. 1946 Joan Crawford accepted her Best Actress Oscar for Mildred Pierce from her bed at home because she was too sick to attend the ceremony. 8. 1947 Harold Russell held his two Oscars (Best Supporting Actor and an honorary award) alongside Olivia De Havilland, Cathy O'Donnell, and Anne Baxter. Harold lost both hands during an army training exercise and is one of only two people to win acting Oscars despite not being a professional actor. 9. 1948 Anne Baxter presented at the ceremony where Miracle on 34th Street took three awards including Best Supporting Actor for Edmund Gwenn and Best Screenplay for George Seaton. 71-year-old Edmund was the oldest Oscar winner until George Burns won in 1976 at the age of 80. 10. 1949 Ava Gardner was the epitome of glamour on the red carpet wrapped in a stole and dripping with jewels. She presented the documentary awards. 11. 1950 Olivia de Havilland added a second Best Actress Oscar to her mantle after winning for her role as Catherine Sloper in The Heiress. 12. 1951 The 23rd Academy Awards was all about All About Eve. The film won six out of the 14 categories it was nominated in. Both Bette Davis and Anne Baxter failed to secure the Best Actress Oscar, which went to Judy Holliday for Born Yesterday. 13. 1952 Humphrey Bogart and wife Lauren Bacall arrived in style to the ceremony at Hollywood's Pantages Theater, where Bogart won Best Actor for The African Queen. 14. 1953 Shirley Booth posed for photographers while gripping her Best Actress Oscar for playing Lola Delaney in Come Back, Little Sheba. This also marked the first year that the ceremony was televised. 15. 1954 Audrey Hepburn took the stage to accept the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Roman Holiday. 16. 1955 Marlon Brando and Grace Kelly celebrated their Oscars with a kiss. On the Waterfront was the big winner of the night. The film won Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint), and Best Director (Eliza Kazan). Grace took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in The Country Girl. 17. 1956 Jack Lemmon arrived at the ceremony in New York City with his wife, Cynthia Stone, on his arm. She proved to be a good luck charm because he took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Mister Roberts. 18. 1957 Elizabeth Taylor hung out backstage with winners Yul Brynner (The King and I) and her third husband, Mike Todd, who won an Oscar for producing Best Picture winner Around the World in 80 Days. 19. 1958 Best Supporting Actor and Actress winners Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki hugged it out after nabbing Oscars for their roles in Sayonara. The ceremony had multiple hosts including Bob Hope, Rosalind Russell, David Niven, James Stewart, Jack Lemmon, and ... Donald Duck. 20. 1959 Susan Hayward wiped the sweat from David Niven's brow as they posed for photos after winning the Best Actor and Actress Oscars. She won for I Want to Live and he won for Separate Tables. Meanwhile, that year, host Jerry Lewis scrambled to fill the time when the final award was given out 20 minutes before the show was scheduled to end. 21. 1960 Simone Signoret (Best Actress for Room at the Top) posed for reporters alongside William Wyler, who won Best Director for Ben-Hur, and Best Actor Charlton Heston, who also won for Ben-Hur. 22. 1961 Elizabeth Taylor accepted her first Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Butterfield 8. 23. 1962 Rita Moreno couldn't contain her excitement while making a phone call after winning Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. One of the evening's stranger moments involved a New York City cab driver taking the stage to give host Bob Hope a homemade Oscar statue. 24. 1963 Sophia Loren and Gregory Peck enjoyed each other's company at the 35th Academy Awards, where Peck nabbed the Best Actor trophy for To Kill a Mockingbird. Frank Sinatra hosted the show. 25. 1964 Attendees at the Governors Ball (the official after-party) congratulated Sidney Poitier on his history-making Best Actor win for Lilies of the Field. He was the first black actor to win that award. 26. 1965 Audrey Hepburn posed with Best Actress winner Julie Andrews, who won for Mary Poppins. Audrey's film My Fair Lady was also a big winner that night, taking home Best Picture, Best Director (George Cukor), and Best Actor (Rex Harrison). 27. 1966 Presenter Rex Harrison and other stars gathered in front of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium before the ceremony, which marked the first time the Oscars were broadcast in color. 28. 1967 Walter Matthau was all smiles back at his table after winning Best Supporting Actor for The Fortune Cookie. A strike by the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists nearly kept the whole show from happening, but a settlement was reached hours before the ceremony. 29. 1968 Sonny and Cher were interviewed on the red carpet before the ceremony, where In the Heat of the Night, The Graduate, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner all took home some trophies. 30. 1969 Ingrid Bergman presented the Best Actress award, which was a surprise tie between Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn. Barbara won for Funny Girl and Katharine for The Lion in Winter. 31. 1970 John Wayne and his family celebrated his Best Actor win for playing Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. Midnight Cowboy was also one of the big winners of the night. 32. 1971 Best Actress nominee Ali MacGraw chatted up Anthony Quinn at the ceremony, where Patton took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. George C. Scott declined his Best Actor trophy because he didn't feel he was in competition with other actors. 33. 1972 Philip D'Antoni and Gene Hackman posed with their Oscars for The French Connection along with Jane Fonda who won Best Actress for Klute. The ceremony also welcomed Charlie Chaplin back to the U.S. with an honorary Oscar after his 20 year-exile for alleged ties to communism. 34. 1973 Sacheen Littlefeather took the stage to refuse Marlon Brando's Oscar on his behalf saying, "I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you ... that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry." The full statement ran in The New York Times the following day after Sacheen was cut off because of time. 35. 1974 A then 10-year-old Tatum O'Neal cradled her Best Supporting Actress Oscar backstage while taking photos alongside Jill Ireland and Charles Bronson. She remains the youngest person ever to win an Academy Award (she nabbed it for Paper Moon). The telecast was also interrupted by a man running across the stage naked. Oh, the '70s... 36. 1975 Francis Ford Coppola took home Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for The Godfather Part II. 37. 1976 Bernadette Peters performed "How Lucky Can You Get" from Funny Lady, which was nominated for Best Original Song but lost to "I'm Easy" from Nashville. 38. 1977 Irwin Winkler, Sylvester Stallone, and Robert Chartoff were ecstatic over Rocky winning Best Picture. John G. Avildsen also won Best Director for the film. 39. 1978 Mickey Mouse and R2-D2 briefly shared the stage. The Star Wars droid was on hand as presenter for the Special Achievement Award and Mickey presented the Short Subjects Awards. 40. 1979 Steve Lawrence and Sammy Davis Jr. took the stage to perform a medley called "Oscar's Only Human" comprised of songs that weren't included in the Best Original Song category. 41. 1980 Meryl Streep beat out Jane Alexander, Barbara Barrie, Candice Bergen, and Mariel Hemingway to nab her first Oscar (Best Supporting Actress) for Kramer vs. Kramer. 42. 1981 The ceremony was postponed by a day after an attempted assassination against President Reagan. But the show must — and did — go on. That year, Irene Cara performed the Oscar-winning song "Fame" from the movie by the same name. 43. 1982 Bette Midler presented the Best Original Song Oscar to the team behind "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)." 44. 1983 John Travolta handed Ben Kingsley his Best Actor Oscar for his title role in Gandhi. The film also won Best Picture, Best Director (Richard Attenborough), and five other awards. It also marked the first Best Actress Oscar for Meryl Streep for Sophie's Choice. 45. 1984 Shirley Maclaine got a congratulatory hug from Rock Hudson as he presented her with the Best Actress Oscar for Terms of Endearment, which also took home four other awards that night. 46. 1985 Jack Lemmon hosted the ceremony where Amadeus took top honors. It was Sally Field who really stole the show (and everyone's hearts) when she accepted her Best Actress Oscar saying, "The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" 47. 1986 Cher was just a presenter, but she definitely stole the show in her Bob Mackie gown while giving the Best Supporting Actor award to Don Ameche for Cocoon. 48. 1987 Oprah and documentarian Brigitte Berman held the Best Documentary Feature Oscar backstage, which Berman won for Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got. 49. 1988 Michael Douglas waved to fans on the red carpet before going on to take home the Best Actor Oscar for Wall Street. 50. 1989 Jodie Foster took home the Best Actress Oscar for The Accused and was all smiles backstage posing for reporters. Rain Man took home Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Barry Levinson), and Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman). 51. 1990 Denzel Washington proudly held his Best Supporting Actor Oscar backstage after winning for his role in Glory. 52. 1991 Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were the "It" couple on the red carpet this year. During the ceremony, Dances with Wolves took home Best Picture and Best Director (Kevin Costner). 53. 1992 Steven Spielberg presented longtime pal and fellow director George Lucas with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. 54. 1993 Jack Nicholson and Barbra Streisand posed backstage with the man of the evening, Clint Eastwood, who took home two Oscars for Unforgiven (Best Picture and Best Director). 55. 1994 Winners Bruce Springsteen, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks celebrated their Oscars with Elton John at his AIDS Foundation after-party. It was Spielberg's first Oscar win (which he earned for directing Schindler's List) aside from receiving the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1987. 56. 1995 Best Actor nominee Morgan Freeman hit the red carpet with his wife and daughter on his arm. 57. 1996 Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) laid one on Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) while they celebrated their Best Actor/Actress wins. 58. 1997 Lauren Bacall walked the red carpet with her family while celebrating her first-ever nomination at 72 years old. The English Patient ended up being the top contender and Bacall lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Juliette Binoche. 59. 1998 James Cameron proclaimed himself to be "King of the World" after winning Best Director for Titanic. It won 10 other awards that night, including Best Picture. 60. 1999 Roberto Benigni was the life of the party and the man of the hour for his work in Life is Beautiful, which won three awards.
