Reportedly, he was very skeptical about the state of America in his later years. 3. Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt loved the outdoors, so when he left the White House he went on a speaking tour in Europe. He also went on a safari in Africa. 4. George W. Bush After he left the White House, he took up painting! You can actually find his paintings in a book called "Portraits of Courage." 5. Jimmy Carter Carter worked hard on philanthropic causes, mainly Habitat for Humanity, well into his 90s. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for co-founding the Carter Center, which works to gain peace in the world and eradicate diseases. He also became friends with Willie Nelson! Sadly, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1994. 7. Richard Nixon Nixon has been the only President to actually resign. He tried to repair his image by writing books and speaking at different events. 8. George Washington Our first President returned home to his farm in Mount Veron. Unfortunately, he died two years later from a throat infection. 9. Harry S. Truman When Truman left the White House, he found out he had no savings. He decided to write a memoir which dug him out of his financial troubles. 10. George H.W. Bush Bush helped his sons with politics after he left the White House. Later, Taft became the only person to become President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. 12. Calvin Coolidge Coolidge retired in Massachusetts and took up boating. He also wrote a weekly newspaper column that he called "Calvin Coolidge Says." 13. Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower and his wife retired on a farm in Gettysburg and mainly stayed out of politics. However, he did endorse Richard Nixon when he ran for President. 14. Herbert Hoover An avid fisherman, he wrote and published a book called "Fishing for Fun - And To Wash Your Soul."
