If you own a Keurig coffee machine, you know that it is an easy and delicious way to get your daily coffee. These days, Keurigs are so low maintenance and offer so many different flavors and ways to get your coffee fix. Some versions even make lattes and other fancier coffee drinks.

Keurigs are pretty easy to maintain, but you do need to clean them out thoroughly to prevent mold and harmful bacteria from forming! This kind of mold and bacteria could make you sick if you aren’t careful. So, if you use your Keurig every day, you need to know how to clean it properly.

You’ll need to pick up some microfiber cloths, white distilled vinegar, pack of Keurig filters, and descaling solution.

Once you pick up these items, you should clean out your Keurig about once a week or more often if it gets a little gross. You will also need to frequently empty the drip tray. You’ll only need to use the descaling solution every three to six months because it removes mineral buildup. Some signs you need to “descale” your Keurig are slow brewing and your cup not filling up the way it should.

Change the filters every two months or more often if you use it multiple times per day.

It is easy to clean the outside of the Keurig. Grab those microfiber cloths and wet one with soapy water. Wipe the outside and the drip tray. You should never put the entire Keurig in water, especially if it is plugged in. We recommend unplugging it during cleaning.

After it is unplugged and cooled down, take apart the K-Cup pod holder and funnel and wash them. Take the water reservoir and lid off and wash those too. These should all be hand washed only. Rinse thoroughly and don’t use a towel to dry that might leave lint behind, which could mess up the Keurig. Be sure to spray the filter with water, too.

If you need to descale the Keurig, you will need to empty the water reservoir and filter. Make sure the machine is off and then fill the water reservoir with 10 oz. of vinegar. Put a big ceramic mug under the spout (do not add a K-Cup) and brew. Repeat one more time with water instead of vinegar to rinse everything out and then let it sit for about 30 minutes before using it again.

If you have the descaling solution, do the same thing but swap out the white vinegar for the descaling solution. Both work great.
