Many things have changed drastically over the years. Do you remember what your first phone looked like? There are many other items that you use often or even every day that looked very different 100 years ago. Here is a list and photos of everyday objects from around 100 years ago.
Let’s begin with a summer staple! Do you know what bathing suits looked like in the early 1900s?
1. Bathing suit
Bathing suits can be pretty skimpy these days, but they started out very modest. Bathing suits for women looked pretty much like dresses back in the early 1900s.
2. Luxury cars
Luxury cars now cost tons of money. They were very expensive over 100 years ago when they were first coming out. Henry Ford’s Model T was introduced in 1908 and even several years later only the wealthy could buy one.
3. Refridgerators
These days some fridges have impressive technology but back in the day, they were very simple and looked more like cabinets. They were large and took up a lot of space. The very first electric fridges were super expensive (about $7,000 in today’s money). Wow!
4. Pens
Pens now come in compact sizes and every color imaginable. Early pens were fountain pens and required inkwells where you had to dip the pen into the ink to be able to write with it.
5. Toys
Kids have every toy imaginable now. 100 years ago, the hoop was a popular toy. You would roll a hoop down a hill with a stick and kids loved it!
6. Bicycle
Bicycles don’t look that much different these days, but they do have a lot more styles and gears available now. Vintage styles are actually coming back! The wheels also looked a lot thinner and could be different sizes back in the day.
7. Cameras
Being able to capture a moment was truly amazing. Cameras changed our world but they were very big, clunky and hard to use 100 years ago. The 1920s did see the first handheld cameras which were a big change.
8. Washing machines
Thank your lucky stars that washing your clothes is so easy today. 100 years ago they had to use a very complicated machine that took a really long time to wash your clothes. It was probably still easier to wash clothes by hand.
9. Vacuums
The vacuum doesn’t look much different but they are way more effective today than they were 100 years ago. The original vacuum debuted in 1901.
