• 1957 –  Buddy Knox became the first rock artist to write his own #1 song as “Party Doll” topped the charts.
• 1958 – Little Richard had his final US Top 10 hit with “Good Golly Miss Molly”. The song was from his last recording sessions for Specialty Records, after which he recorded a series of Gospel songs.
• 1963 – 16 year old Lesley Gore records her breakthrough hit, “It’s My Party”. Producer Quincy Jones hurried Gore into the studio when he found out that Phil Spector was going to cut the song with The Crystals.
• 1963 –  Skeeter Davis prevailed on the Easy Listening chart for a third week with “The End Of The World”.
• 1963 –  The Chiffons climbed to #1 with “He’s So Fine”, which would go on to lead all songs for four weeks.

• 1964 – “Jeopardy” debuted on NBC-TV.
• 1966 – The Barbra Streisand special Color Me Barbra aired on CBS-TV.
• 1970 – “Another World – Somerset” debuted on NBC-TV.
• 1988 – The Soul Train Music Awards were at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. The show was broadcast live in select cities and aired later in other areas. Dionne Warwick hosted.

• 1867 – The United States government purchases Alaska. The purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million meant the US was paying roughly two cents per acre of land.
• 1909 – The Queensboro Bridge also known as the 59th Street Bridge, linking the New York boroughs of Manhattan and Queens, opened.
• 1939 – The comic book “Detective Comics #27” appeared on newstands. This comic introduced Batman.
• 1981 – U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in Washington, DC, by John W. Hinckley Jr. Two police officers and Press Secretary James Brady were also wounded. The attacker John Hinckley, the son of an affluent oil industry executive, was charged with trying to assassinate the president and in the following June, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to hospital.
• 1982 – The space shuttle Columbia completed its third and its longest test flight after 8 days in space.
• 1987 – The 1986 Oscars are handed out at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Paul Newman wins Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Touchstone Pictures’ The Color of Money. Marlee Matlin wins Best Actress for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
• 1987 – An anonymous foreign buyer purchased Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece ‘Sunflowers’ for nearly $36.3 million.
• 1992 – Time magazine puts Garth Brooks on the cover, calling him a “jumping-jack-flash performer who can bring 40-year-olds to tears with existential hymns about accepting life’s compromises” on the pages inside. Presumably a good thing
• 1992 – The 64th Academy Awards – The Silence of the Lambs won five awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins) and Best Actress (Jodie Foster).
• 1993 – In the Peanuts comic strip, Charlie Brown hit his first home run.
• 1998 – Rolls-Royce was purchased by BMW in a $570 million deal.
• 1999 – A jury in Portland, Oregon, in a landmark case ordered Philip Morris to pay $81 million to the family of a man who died of lung cancer after smoking Marlboros for four decades.
