Country star Granger Smith had to sadly report to the world that his 3-year-old son, River Kelly Smith, died at age 3 after enduring a “tragic accident.” He revealed the devastating news in an Instagram post to his fans.
The parents of River did not disclose what their son died from exactly, but they did reveal that doctors were unable to revive him. They also share that they decide to donate River’s organs “so that other children will be given a second chance at life.”
Read the full statement from Granger below:
I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this.
In the post, Granger specifies that those who wish to donate in memoriam of River’s life, they may do so by donating to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name.
Granger’s wife and mother of their child posts something similar. She says, “Nothing can prepare a mother to deliver this kind of news.” Their 3-year-old son had just turned three on May 16th. In a birthday collage post, mother Amber Smith, writes, “Someone is 3 today! Happy birthday to our fearless, tractor and Lightening McQueen loving, red-headed, daredevil! He keeps us laughing, definitely keeps me on my toes, gives the best hugs and is as sweet as honey! We love our little Riv.”
River is survived by his parents, older sister London (7), and brother Lincoln (5). May he rest easy and may the family find the utmost peace during this difficult time.
