The Dixie Cups: ‘Going To The Chapel Of Love’

By Kaye Bassett Millar

ChapelOfLove-Music2
“Chapel of Love” is a song written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, and was made famous by The Dixie Cups in 1964. The song spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song tells of the happiness and excitement the narrator feels on her wedding day, for she and her love are going to the “chapel of love”, and “we’ll never be lonely anymore.” Many other artists have recorded the song.

It was originally recorded by the Blossoms in April 1963 but was never released. The Dixie Cups’ version was the debut release of the new Red Bird Records run by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller along with George Goldner. The Ronettes included the song on their debut album released in November 1964 with production by Phil Spector. In 1973, singer and actress Bette Midler had a moderate hit with a cover of “Chapel of Love”.

Lyrics of Chapel of Love by The Dixie Cups

Woah! Spring is here and the sky is so very blue.

Wo-o-o-oah, birds all sing as if they knew,

today’s the day we’ll say, “I do,”

and we’ll never be lonely anymore.

Because we’re goin’ to the chapel

and we’re gonna get married,

goin’ to the chapel

and we’re gonna get married,

gee, I really love you

and we’re gonna get married,

goin’ to the chapel of love.

Bells will ring and the sun is gonna shine.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m gonna be his, he’s gonna be mine.

We’re gonna love until the end of time,

and we’ll never be lonely anymore.

Because we’re goin’ to the chapel

and we’re gonna get married,

goin’ to the chapel

and we’re gonna get married,

gee, I really love you

and we’re gonna get married,

goin’ to the chapel of love.

One more time around, oh.

Goin’ to the chapel and we’re, oh, gonna get married,

goin’, goin’ to the chapel, baby; we’re gonna get married, married,

oh, gee, I really love you, c’mon baby,

we’re gonna get married, married,

goin’ to the chapel of love.

Oooh, a one more time,

we’re goin’ to the chapel of love.

C’mon, c’mon and let me hear it,

goin’ to the chapel of love, love, love.

shooby doo-whop, wa da

One more song by the wonderful, Dixie Cups…
