Take A Look At Hess Toy Trucks Throughout The Years

Do you remember opening up gifts on Christmas morning and getting a Hess Toy Truck? Hess Toy Trucks have been around since the mid-1960s and they are still one of the most beloved toy trucks available. While the look of the toys has certainly changed a bit over the years, this iconic toy brand is still loved by many. They don't just make trucks, but they also sell toy helicopters, trailers, cars, and more. Do you remember what some of the vintage Hess Toy Trucks looked like? The first Hess Toy Truck was made in 1964 and was a Hess Tanker Trailer. It featured working headlights and taillights, which was rare for a toy in these days. Check Out Hess Toys From The 1960s To Now 1. 1964-65 Hess Tanker Trailer The first Hess toy was a Tanker Trailer that featured those working lights, a funnel to fill the cargo tank, and a green hose to empty the tank. It was one of the most popular toys in those days and was based on the actual Hess tanker trailers that delivered gas to Hess stations. 2. 1966 Hess Tanker Ship A few years after the success of their first toy, they came out with the Hess Tanker Ship which is a replica of the Hess Voyager. It is the longest Hess toy out there and a classic if you love toy boats. 3. 1967 Hess Tanker Truck This truck has working headlights and taillights and a flexible hose. The bottom of the box it came in was red velvet and you could use it as a display stand for your toy truck. 4. 1970-1971 Hess Fire Truck The first Hess Fire Truck was actually a replica of a Hess fire truck used in New Jersey. It was the first of only four fire trucks in the whole collection so far. It features two detachable rubber hoses and a detachable ladder. It also has a working emergency light. 5. 1975 Hess Box Trailer The Hess Box Trailer was the first to have sliding side doors and working rear doors. It was also the first truck to have a full driver's side window. 6. 1977 Hess Fuel Oil Tanker The Fuel Oil Tanker from 1977 has a chrome grille, which was relatively new for this time period on toys. The rubber tires say "Amerada Hess" which came after the company's official name change in 1969 after a merger. The Hess Training Van was modeled after the GMC Royale motorhome. Hess used these motorhomes to conduct training sessions. It was the first time a lighted Hess logo was on the side of one of the toy vehicles. Hess had their first commercial ever on TV to advertise this toy. 8. 1982-83 First Hess Truck This was one of the most detailed toy trucks from Hess. It is a replica of the six-wheeled Chevy that Leon Hess (the founder) drove back in 1933. It is painted in the original Hess colors. 9. 1984 Hess Fuel Oil Tanker with Bank This Oil Tanker was important for two reasons. It was the first toy that featured a coin slot, where children could hide money. It was also the last Hess truck to use a single D battery. 10. 1987 Hess 18-Wheeler Bank This was the first white trailer and also has a coin slot. It also comes with three green Hess oil barrels. 11. 1988 Hess Toy Truck and Racer This was the first time Hess released two-toys-in-one, added license plates with the year of issue, and featured vehicles not based on actual Hess trucks. It was a big year! 12. 1989 Hess Fire Truck Bank This was Hess's first white fire truck and the first to feature built-in sound effects. You could turn on a siren and lights. It has a new feature of a three-way switch to activate different sounds. 14. 1992 Hess 18-Wheeler and Racer This is another two-in-one toy where you could put the smaller racer into the wheeler. Pretty cool, right? 15. 1993 Hess Patrol Car The Patrol Car was the first toy car made by Hess. It has flashing red, blue, and yellow lights and two different siren sounds. It broke all of the Hess sales records when it came out. 16. 1994 Hess Rescue Truck This new tow truck toy has three different sounds, emergency flashers, a rotating ladder, and retractable side-view mirrors. 17. 1995 Hess Toy Truck and Helicopter This helicopter was a first from Hess. It is another two-in-one toy set. The helicopter features a searchlight, flashing lights, and of course spinning rotors. 18. 1998 Hess RV with Dune Buggy and Motorcycle This set included three toys, which was one of the first times this was offered by Hess. It included an RV, dune buggy, and motorcycle. All have working lights and the motorcycle could even pop wheelies. 19. 1999 Hess Toy Truck and Space Shuttle with Satellite 1999 brought the first space shuttle from Hess. It has lots of working lights and sounds and was on many children's Christmas lists this year. The truck is reminiscent of the older Mack trucks. This airplane was also special because it featured a pilot and was the first person to appear in a Hess toy. 21. 2004 Hess Sport Utility Vehicle and Motorcycles They started a new line of toys featuring a new Sport Utility Vehicle and Motorcycles to celebrate 40 years of toy making. The Sport Utility Vehicle is able to bounce like a real SUV. It was also the first time two motorcycles were included in a set. 22. 2005 Hess Emergency Truck with Rescue Vehicle This two-in-one set features an Emergency Truck with a huge rotating ladder. It also has a Rescue Vehicle which is a Jeep. 23. 2010 Hess Toy Truck and Jet 2010 brought Hess's first jet and included a tractor-trailer to transport the jet. It even has runaway lights and was based on an F-22 Raptor. 24. 2013 Hess Toy Truck and Tractor This two-in-one set has a tractor and has tons of fully functioning lights. The tractor was fully motorized as well and you can move it forward or in reverse. 25. 2018 Hess RV with an ATV and Motorbike The latest Hess edition is an RV, ATV, and Motorbike.
