Benjamin Greenberg, a neurologist who treats children with AFM at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, has said that parents of any child who has been diagnosed with the disease should prepare for ‘extensive physical therapy’. Most children have, thankfully, regained their ability to walk but often need time to heal.
The CDC has not released all of the states affected by AFM due to privacy issues. Some health institutions or families affected by AFM have chosen to make their reports public voluntarily, which has revealed 5 cases of AFM in Maryland and 6 in Minnesota. Be sure to check the official CDC website for more updates on this condition.
If you are concerned about this rare illness, make sure you check out the CDC website to read a full list of symptoms to make sure your child is not affected.
