How cool or warm is it generally in your bedroom? Have you ever thought much about the temperature in your room while you sleep? Some people prefer to be warm and some people prefer to be cooler, but science says that sleeping in a cold room is better for your health in general.
Studies have shown that if your bedroom temperature is above 75 degrees or below 54 degrees, your sleep will be disrupted. The temperature for optimal sleep is between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. As you sleep, your body naturally cools off. If you get too warm, you generally wake up. If your body stays at a low temperature, this could lead to deeper and better sleep.
If the room is way too hot or way too cold, you will likely have a hard time sleeping. But, if the air is cool and you are cuddled up in bed, chances are you will fall asleep very quickly. You will also likely fall into a deeper and more restorative sleep which is amazing for your health.
Sleeping more deeply isn’t the only benefit of sleeping in a cold room. It could also help your body release more melatonin at night, which is great for anti-aging benefits. Sleeping in a cold room has also been shown to burn more calories when you are awake and put you at less of a risk for diseases like diabetes.
So, how do you stay cool, especially when you don’t want to run your air conditioning year round? A programmable thermostat is a good start. It will allow you to fluctuate your home’s temperature throughout the day. You may want it warmer or cooler during the day when you aren’t home to save money on your energy bills or want it to be more comfortable when you are home.
Many new programmable thermostats also have apps, so you can adjust your home’s temperature even when you aren’t home. Thermostats aren’t the only way to cool down before bed. You can try freezing your top sheet before bed, sleeping without clothes, using fans, using a cooling pillow, or keeping one or both feet out from under the covers.
Do you prefer to sleep in a warm or cold room? Did you know that sleeping in a cool room had so many benefits?
