The Germiest Place In An Airport Actually Isn’t The Bathroom

Airports and airplanes are generally filled with a lot of germs. Think of all of the people that come in and out of airplanes and airports each day. Many people come down with colds or other illnesses right after vacation because of being exposed to these germs. A new study reveals that the germiest place in an airport isn’t actually the bathroom.

Bathrooms are usually cleaned pretty often. The study found that the worst offender for germs is those security trays. You know, the ones where you have to put your liquids, electronics, and shoes in. The study swabbed 90 different surfaces in an airport during the winter, when the spread of germs is the highest.

A similar study also found that those check-in kiosk screens at the airport are also pretty germy. The trays, in particular, contained many different viruses, even ones that can last days on hard surfaces. Those trays are one thing in the airport that is touched by literally everyone who comes through and are never cleaned thoroughly.

Since security trays won’t be going away and airports likely won’t take the time to sanitize them for you, make sure to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands immediately after touching them and going through security. If you can’t use hand sanitizer or wash your hands right away, avoid touching your eyes, mouth, nose until you can clean your hands.

Since airports and airplanes are filled with germs, make sure to wash your hands often and thoroughly. This is the best way to avoid getting sick. If you have to cough or sneeze, do so into your arm and ask others to do the same.

Do you often get sick after you travel or go to the airport? Did you realize just how germy those security trays are? Will you be more cautious the next time you have to go through the security line?
