Everyone knows the name Jimmy Buffett, but does everyone know the secret to Jimmy Buffett’s margarita recipe? His musical, Escape to Margaritaville, is currently playing on Broadway and this superstar just shared some secrets about the iconic name and song.
“Most people don’t know the real story behind the song “Margaritaville,” but the truth is that it was written in five minutes,” Buffett says, “It was a hot afternoon, and we stopped at this funky little place for lunch on the way. I thought, ‘Why not have a margarita before going to the airport?'”
Buffett goes on to say that back then, the only place to get a good margarita was in the Mexican border towns- he clearly found himself at the right place at the right time! He ordered one and it was damn good. That’s when he came up with the name Margaritaville.
Buffett says that while these days, margaritas tend to be a bit too sweet for him, he does enjoy a nice, cold one on the rocks with no salt. He says the secret behind a good margarita is to not take it too seriously. “It’s not a science project,” he says.
He says the point of the drink is to disguise the tequila, and that’s exactly what he’s done with his secret recipe!
