When you visit someone else’s home, there are certain things you should and shouldn’t do. Especially if you are a first-time visitor to the home, there are some etiquette rules you should know about. If you want to be a great houseguest, always be polite and learn what you shouldn’t touch.
If you visit someone’s home, here is a list of things you should never touch and things you should avoid doing.
Don’t let yourself in. Always knock or ring the doorbell. Don’t just let yourself in unless it is a very close friend or family member. If you are heading to a house party, don’t arrive too early or too late because it can be rude either way.
People’s bedrooms are safe havens and always off limits unless they allow you to come in. People may let you store coats on the bed or use their bathroom, but don’t snoop around their bedroom. The most private items are often stored there.
If you get hungry or thirsty, ask the host for a snack or water if they aren’t displayed out. Don’t just go into their fridge or pantry and help yourself. If you are coming over and have a restricted diet, either bring food for yourself or let the host know in advance. Always offer to help cook, prep food or clean up afterward too.
Don’t just storm in and change the temperature. If you are really uncomfortable, ask for something to make you feel better. Never just open a window or change the thermostat. It is their house and their energy bills after all.
Don’t invade your host’s privacy by rummaging through cabinets, drawers or items that are laying around. Mail is especially important because it is illegal for people to open another person’s mail. You might be tempted to snoop, but it could ruin a relationship if they catch you.
Do you agree with everything on this list? At what point do you think you can be more comfortable in someone else’s home?
