The Bee Gees Guide To Mending A Broken Heart

Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees wrote “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” in the style of Andy Williams, who was a popular recording artist and television presenter at the time. It became the first #1 US hit for the group, topping the chart for four weeks.

Despite the affected tale of heartache, this song was very easy to write, as Robin Gibb claims they wrote it in about an hour and without struggle or hardship

The Bee Gees released their first ever single in Australia in 1963. It was the Johnny Horton inspired “Battle of the Blue and the Grey.” They cracked the Australian and New Zealand markets within a few years. “Spicks And Specks” was their first ever #1 single, topping the New Zealand charts (#3 in Australia).

The brothers left Australia for London to audition with Robert Stigwood. Stigwood was a director of NEMS Enterprises, the company owned by Beatles svengali Brian Epstein. He signed them up. “New York Mining Disaster 1941 (Have You Seen My Wife, Mr. Jones)” was their first international hit.

“How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”

I can think of younger days
When living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
But no one said a word about the sorrow

How can you mend a broken heart?
Or how can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again, da da da da da

I can still feel the breeze
That rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by

could never see tomorrow
But no one said a word about the sorrow

How can you mend a broken heart?
Howcan you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

And how can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again,

Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
