This Is What It’s Really Like To Be On HGTV’s ‘Fixer Upper’

Homeowners had to put down a lot of money

To even be considered for the show, homeowners needed to be prepared to put down a minimum of $30,000 for their renovation budget. Meaning, if they spent $300,000 on buying the house, their budget needed to be at least $330,000 to be considered. Those huge home makeovers don’t come cheap!

Every room got an upgrade

During the final reveal, viewers always got a chance to see the kitchen, living space, master bedroom, and master bath. In some episodes, viewers would see every single aspect of the house (from the 3 extra guest bedrooms to the half bath to the extremely well-done backyard). However, not every episode featured this.

Just because Chip and Joanna didn’t show off the guest bedroom doesn’t mean they totally ignored it. However, that might mean they didn’t do much renovation to that room. Usually, if a room wasn’t featured, it meant that it wasn’t staged and it had the simplest elements updated, like a fresh coat of paint.

In some instances, the couple didn’t renovate every room in the house, that was actually mentioned on the show and usually correlated back to the family’s budget for the project.

Chip and Joanna did their best to make things personal

While there are some elements of the show that were entirely faked, that doesn’t mean Chip and Jo ever faked their intentions. Joanna would ask the family to create Pinterest boards so she could draw inspiration when staging the home. She also always made sure the family’s children were kept in mind when designing the home, as Chip and Joanna are very family-focused. Fans of the show can recall that Chip and Joanna would take extra pleasure in showing off the children’s bedrooms.
