Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Kids Will Never Be Princes Or Princesses – Here’s Why

Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, everyone can’t wait for them to start a family. While they still need to finish the honeymoon phase, surely the couple already has some ideas for the family they plan to have one day.

Prince Harry has spoken in the past about his desire to have children. In 2017, when he spoke with the Telegraph’s Mad World podcast, he said, “I, of course, I would love to have kids. Yeah, I’m a godfather to quite a few of my friends’ [children] … actually only five or six.”

In order to be a good godfather, Harry admitted that he needed to be seen as a grown up to his godchildren, but he also needed to keep in touch with his inner child. He is used to playing games with his godchildren, which surely will help when he has children of his own.

However, while Harry is still Prince Harry even with his title of Duke of Sussex, his children with Meghan will not bear the title Prince or Princess. Instead, they will be Lord and Lady. So, if they named their children Albert and Caroline, they would be Lord Albert Mountbatten-Windsor and Lady Caroline Mountbatten-Windsor.

This odd rule (that did not apply to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s son, Prince George) dates back to King George V in 1917. The rule comes directly from a Letters Patent decree issued that year, that states:

“The grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”

In case you don’t speak royalty, that means that the great-grandchild through the male line of the reigning sovereign would not be HRHs, which the exception of the oldest son of the Prince of Wales. That would be Prince William’s son, Prince George. However, Queen Elizabeth II stepped in before the birth of Princess Charlotte (and this then applied to Prince Louis) to grant the same title to Prince George’s siblings.

The Queen may very well step in and do the same for her grandson and his new wife. Only time will tell on this one. However, some have suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might not want the HRH title for their children.

What title do you think their children should have? And what names do you think they’ll give their children? If they have a girl, maybe she’ll get the same middle name as her cousin, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana?
