• 1960 – Johnny Horton recorded “North To Alaska” at Quonset Hut Studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

• 1965 – The Silkie recorded their version of “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”.  Paul McCartney played guitar, George Harrison played tambourine and John Lennon produced the song.

• 1969 – Chicago Transit Authority hit the chart on this date with “Questions 67 And 68”. They soon changed their name Chicago.

• 1969 – Brian Jones was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

• 1973 – Guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Seiwell left the group Wings.
• 1973 –  “Lord, Mr. Ford” by Jerry Reed was at #1 on the Country chart, Reed’s second of three #1’s. The song was meant to be a satire on the influence the automobile has had on the American public.

• 1980 – The Urban Cowboy soundtrack double album hit #1 on the US Country chart. The album spawned numerous Top 10 Billboard Country Singles, such as “Lookin’ for Love” by Johnny Lee, “Stand by Me” by Mickey Gilley, and others. The film is said to have kickestarted the 1980s boom in the “Urban Cowboy Movement” aka Neo-Country or Hill Boogie.
• 1986 – The Judd’s’ “Rockin’ With The Rhythm Of The Rain” hit No.1 on Billboard’s country singles chart
• 1975 – Don Kirshner held the first Rock Music Award Show in Santa Monica, California.  The Eagles, Stevie Wonder and Bad Company were among the winners.
• 1975 – Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” was #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

• 1976 – Abba released the single “Fernando”.

• 1976 – Linda Ronstadt released her cover of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day”.
• 1978 – Muddy Waters performed at a White House picnic for U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

• 1963 – The first episode of ‘Ready Steady Go! was shown on UK TV. The first show featured The Searchers, Jet Harris, Pat Boone, Billy Fury and Brian Poole and The Tremeloes. The show eventually attracted more relevant artists including The Beatles, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Rolling Stones, The Four Tops, The Kinks and more.
• 1967 – Scott McKenzie hit No.1 on UK singles chart with ‘San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)’

• 1967 – The Small Faces hit the singles chart with ‘Itchycoo Park.’ The single only peaked at No.3 in the UK chart, but it was one of the first pop singles to use flanging, an effect heard in the bridge after of each chorus.
• 1975 – The Bee Gees hit a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Jive Talkin’

• 1975 – The One Hit Wonders, Typically Tropical hit No.1 with ‘Barbados’
• 1980 – AC/DC hit #1 in the U.K. with the album Back in Black. It was the first AC/DC album recorded without lead singer Bon Scott (who died on 19 February 1980) and was dedicated to him. The album has sold an estimated 49 million copies worldwide to date, making it the second highest selling album of all time, and the best selling hard rock or heavy metal album, as well as the best selling album ever released by a band.
• 1980 – The Rolling Stones remained at #1 on the Album chart with Emotional Rescue.
• 1980 – ABBA hit No.1 with ‘The Winner Takes It All’. Taken from their ‘Super Trouper’ album. By this time, both couples were divorced

• 1986 – Queen appeared in concert for the final time at Knebworth Park in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, England.
• 1991 – 5th Dimension earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
• 1995 – Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead died of a heart attack in Forest Knolls, California at the age of 53.
