If there’s one thing I can confidently say everyone has in their kitchen cupboard, it’s salt. Salt can be used for so many things: flavoring food, arts and crafts, and even as a cleaning product!

Most of us only use salt to make our food taste better, but it actually has so many more uses. In fact, it’s one of the most versatile products out there. If you love life hacks, you might know how great salt is, but chances are you don’t know about some of the best ways to use the grainy substance.

Check out seven of the best life hacks using salt below!

1. Get Sticky Stuff Off Your Iron

If something sticky melted onto your iron, you might think you have to get a whole new iron. Don’t worry, though, you don’t have to shell out money for a brand new iron; you can make it as good as new by just using some salt and wax paper. Simply set your iron to high, pour a good amount of salt onto wax paper, and move the hot iron back and forth over the salt for a minute. The salt will grab onto the sticky mess and make your iron perfectly clean!

2. Clean Up Raw Egg

Everyone who has ever broken an egg knows how difficult it can be to clean up raw egg. Instead of using a million paper towels, just pour salt onto the raw egg and wait for about 15 minutes. The salt will coagulate the egg and make it much easier to clean up.

3. Put Out A Grease Fire

Grease fires are absolutely terrifying, especially because you can’t put them out with water. Instead of freaking out and calling the fire department, grab your handy dandy salt and pour it all over the flames. The salt will smother the fire and keep you safe. (If the fire is large or you don’t think you can put it out without getting hurt, by all means call the fire department.)

4. Clean Burned Food Off A Pan

Next time you burn food into a pot or pan (let’s be honest, it happens to the best of us), you don’t have to scrub for hours to get it clean. Instead, cover the inside of the pan with salt, then add a little bit of water and let it sit. After ten minutes or so, swish the water around in the pan, then wipe out the pan with a sponge.

5. Clean A Gross Sponge

If your sponge has gotten a little nasty, don’t throw it away. Fill a tupperware container with two cups of water and a quarter cup of salt, and stir until the salt is dissolved. Next, add your icky sponge and let it sit overnight. In the morning, squeeze it out and it’ll be good as new!

6. Clean Bathtub Stains

Bathtubs can get pretty grimy over time, but you don’t have to spend a bunch of money on fancy bathroom cleaners. Just combine equal amounts of salt and turpentine in a container and mix until the salt is mostly dissolved. Open up a window, pop on some gloves, and use a sponge to scrub your tub with the turpentine-salt mixture.

7. Unclog Drains

Make yourself some natural Drano to unclog your drains! Mix together a quarter cup of salt and a quarter cup of baking soda, then pour it directly into the drain. Next, pour half a cup of vinegar directly into the drain as well. The bubbly mixture will eat away at whatever is clogging your drain. Wait 15 minutes, then pour boiling water down the drain.
