Original 1966 Batmobile Replica Is Up For Sale For Anyone To Buy

By Zack Walkter

From Hotwheels Wikia: “the Batmobile itself was created in the astonishingly short time of three weeks by custom car guru George Barris, who had previously purchased Lincoln’s elegant 1955 “Futura” Concept Car.

The cockpit is packed with crime-fighting gear, including a Detect-O-Scope (Forbes)

With new 1960s-style wheel arches, a few bat-like styling cues and a coat of black paint, the space-age Futura began a new life as the Dark Knight’s ride.”

This car would be the “hero car” that is mentioned below. “There were six cars used during the shooting of the TV show and the movie, including two tour cars, a stunt car, a crash car and a “hero” car used for close shots.”

If you are a benevolent rich person, you might want to invest in buying the car just so you could turn it over to a museum so that millions of fans may enjoy it, but that’s not necessarily what I would do. It would be extremely difficult to give away such an iconic piece of pop culture history.

“Over the years, many collectors and aficionados have built versions of the Batmobile–probably as many as 40 or 50–and of varying quality,” Lombardo says, “but to see one built so well, and from the original molds, which this appears to be, puts it in the company with just three or four other vehicles.”

The Batmobile first appeared in DC Comics in 1939 and was pictured as an unremarkable red car. It was followed in the comics by later vehicles, including the Batcycle, Batboat, Batplane and Robin’s Redbird.

But if you have the money, you can do with this sweet ride what you will. I can’t imagine what this thing will eventually go for, but I guess it’s true what they say: If you have to ask, it’s too expensive!
