• 1946 – Dean Martin recorded his first four songs.
• 1955 – Alma Cogan was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Dreamboat’. Nicknamed ‘The Girl With the Laugh In Her Voice’, she was the highest paid British female entertainer of her era.

• 1959 – Joan Baez made her first recording. It was a duet with Bob Gibson which was recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival.
• 1964 – The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go?” was released.
• 1964 – “People” by Barbra Streisand remained #1 for the third week on the Adult chart.
• 1964 – “I Get Around” by the Beach Boys held on to #1 for a second straight week

• 1964 – The Beatles appeared live on the ABC Television program “Lucky Stars (Summer Spin)”, performing ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, ‘Long Tall Sally’, ‘Things We Said Today’ and ‘You Can’t Do That’.
• 1967 – Kenny Rogers formed The First Edition. Rogers had left the New Christy Minstrels.
• 1969 – The Rolling Stones released the single “Honky Tonk Women” in the U.S.

• 1970 – The Who’s “Summertime Blues” was released.

• 1977 – Tonight saw the opening night of a new punk venue, The Vortex Club, on Wardour Street, London with Siouxise, Adam And The Ants, The Slits and Sham 69.
• 1979 – Neil Young’s concert film, “Rust Never Sleeps,” debuted at the Bruin Theatre in Westwood, CA. The album of the same name was released simultaneously.
• 1981 – The Specials had their second and final UK No.1 single with ‘Ghost Town’.

• 1981 – Cliff Richard’s Love Songs was the top album in the U.K.
• 1981 – Kenny Rogers topped the Adult Contemporary chart with “I Don’t Need You”.
• 1981 – “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes, which was #1 for five weeks before slipping to #2, was #1 again for the third straight week, making a total of eight.

• 1982 – Phil Collen, former guitarist with the glam rock band Girl, replaced Pete Willis in Def Leppard who was fired due to excessive alcohol consumption on the job.
• 1987 – Heart started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Alone’, it made No.3 in the UK.
• 1987 – Heart’s sixth hit in the last two years, “Alone”, reached #1.

• 1988 – Michael Jackson released the single “Another Part Of Me”.
• 1991 – American singer and lyricist Roger Christian died. Worked with The Beach Boys and co-wrote songs recorded by Jan and Dean. Christian worked as a radio personality in the 1960s.
• 1992 – “Tennessee” by Arrested Development was the #1 R&B song.
• 1992 – “Baby Got Back” spent a second week at #1
• 1996 – Beck made a surprise performance at Lollapalooza ’96 in St. Louis, MO.
• 1998 – MTV premiered the special “Beastiography” about the Beastie Boys
• 1998 – Billie went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Because We Want To’. The 15 year old made chart history by becoming the second youngest female to score a No.1; Helen Shapiro was the youngest at 14 with the 1961 No.1 single ‘You Don’t Know’.
• 1999 – Ricky Martin started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’. A US No.1 for 5 weeks.

• 1996 – Jonathan Melvoin keyboard player with the Smashing Pumpkins died from a drug overdose in New York City aged 34.
• 2000 – Lars Ulrich (Metallica) was the first witness to testify at a U.S. Senate hearing over copyright law issues concerning free sharing of music files on Web sites such as Napster and MP3.com.
• 2000 – The video “Jaws,” the Anniversary Collector’s Edition, was released.

• 2000 – Liam Neeson broke his pelvis after hitting a deer with his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
