Mama Cass is a true music icon, and will always be remembered for her unique vocals. Growing up, I always listened to Mama Cass because my parents loved her music. My mom always played the whimsical ballad, ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’ on our car rides, and so I always sang along.
The melody is soft and sweet, and it carries an easy rhythm to it. I can’t imagine someone not falling in love with the melody. What does Mama Cass and this tune remind you of?
Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper I love you
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me
Say night-ie night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you’ll miss me
While I’m alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I’m longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I’m longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me
My dad’s favorite Mama Cass song was California Dreamin’. He used to play it on repeat at home, and so I learned to belt out the lyrics with a smile on my face. He would sing the Papas section, and I would sing the Mamas section, echoing the lyrics.
The folk harmony gives California Dreamin’ a unique sound, and it makes everyone want to sing and dance. This song had me thinking about hopping on the next plane to California to escape the cold weather I had on the east coast.
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is grey (and the sky is grey)
I’ve been for a walk (I’ve been for a walk)
On a winter’s day (on a winter’s day)
I’d be safe and warm (I’d be safe and warm)
If I was in L.A. (if I was in L.A.)
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day
Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees (got down on my knees)
And I pretend to pray (I pretend to pray)
You know the preacher like the cold (preacher like the cold)
He knows I’m gonna stay (knows I’m gonna stay)
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is grey (and the sky is grey)
I’ve been for a walk (I’ve been for a walk)
On a winter’s day (on a winter’s day)
If I didn’t tell her (if I didn’t tell her)
I could leave today (I could leave today)
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day (California dreamin’)
(Repeat)
On such a winter’s day

Although she was around before my time, I absolutely adore her work, and I hope to pass on the light of her music to the next generation. She remains a fond memory to those who knew her during her time, and she becomes an inspiration to those who are now discovering her. Mama Cass, you are a legend.
