“The French Connection” is a gritty police drama that was the first R-rated movie to win an Oscar. This 1971 film follows NYPD detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Roy Scheider) as they deal with a major drug smuggling case based out of France. “The French Connection” is a classic thriller with a car chase scene that is still considered one of the best in movie history.
