A question that had appeared on a third-grade student’s math homework has left the internet stumped after a concerned mom went online to try and find the answer.
Dusty Sappington, 40, from Terry, Mississippi, took to Reddit last week to share a photo of her eight-year-old daughter Izzy’s math homework, writing: ‘This third-grade math problem…’ The math problem, which Dusty circled in red, reads: ‘Janell had 15 marbles. She lost some of them. How many does Janell have now?’
Izzy had answered the problem with a question mark, and Dusty asked people in the Reddit thread to help her out. ‘If someone can answer this correctly, my child will be done with her homework!’ she said, noting her child wasn’t given any additional instructions.
Unsurprisingly, the tricky question left many Reddit users stumped, with some insisting that there wasn’t an actual numerical answer. ‘Today I learned that I’d possibly score less than some 3rd graders on math homework. I used to be so confident and cocky,’ funk_dunk wrote, while grenadetrade.com replied: ‘The correct answer is, “some.”‘ ‘Janell lost her marbles,’ lockestar joked, and Dusty replied: ‘Me too…’
Some people insisted the answer had to be < 15, but flowers added: ‘I don’t think that’s a fair 3rd-grade question.’
Others suggested 15 -x, but the answer seemed out of place on the worksheet, which featured straightforward questions with numerical answers.
And Lenny_Here offered up a complicated mathematical equation for the answer.
‘Come on guys, this is basic grade 3 stuff,’ the person joked.
Dusty told HuffPost that her daughter has dyslexia and attends a private school that offers traditional classes but also specializes in helping students with learning disabilities
‘I haven’t found out the answer, but hope to see her graded paper soon,’ she told the outlet.
‘To be honest, I’m unsure if it was printed in error or was a question to test her knowledge of less than and greater than, which she has touched on in the past.’ Credits
