In Preschool, He Told His Class He Would Marry Her. 20 Years Later, He Did.

Preschool is an exciting time in a child’s life. In most cases, it’s their first time getting to spend time with other children their age for more than just a playdate here and there. And when children are interacting so closely together, it’s only a matter of time before puppy love develops. For three-year-olds Laura Scheel and Matt Grodsky, it was almost like love at first sight. The two were nearly inseparable and did everything from playing on the swings and eating string cheese together. Grodsky was absolutely smitten with his adorable friend. Laura Scheel and Matt Grodsky have a love story that literally sounds like it came straight out of a novel. The two go way back, as in, they've known each other since they were kids ― as in, they went to preschool together. The two first met each other when they were classmates at a preschool in Phoenix. They became the best of friends at school. They'd play together, chase each other around, and would even break nap protocol and stay up together. On an Instagram account dedicated to how the two met (@thewaywemet), Matt posted a photo with a caption that described his earliest childhood memories with Laura. He recalled standing in front of his class, declaring that he would one day marry Laura. Laura was special to him, as she was the one who taught him how to eat string cheese "the right way," ride on swings, and so forth. Matt saw his future right in front of him at the young age of a preschooler. “I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day,” he wrote on his Instagram post. While Matt recalled envisioning his future with the love of his life, while Laura recalls him being one big goofball. “We did almost everything together,” she told HuffPost. “We would just have a blast together.” Despite Laura's memories of the two just fooling around, Matt remembers putting in his best efforts to impress Laura at an early age. “Lion King was what all the kids were into back then so we would spend most of our time reciting lines from the movie on the playground,” Matt told HuffPost. One time, he tried to attract Laura's attention by breaking open a piñata. “I remember trying to impress her during a Cinco De Mayo celebration at the preschool where we were trying to break open a piñata. Fortunately, I was the kid who managed to do it and I assume it got her attention.” Unfortunately, their childhood together was short-lived. After preschool, Matt and Laura wound up attending different elementary schools. Because they were so young, they eventually lost touch with each other. They rekindled their friendship years later during their first year of high school. Coincidentally, Laura spotted Matt's name in a mutual friend's cell phone. The friend wanted to play matchmaker with the two, but Laura wasn't sure of the idea at first. Although the two hit it off in preschool, Laura was skeptical about how their relationship would be after all these years. “I was hesitant to go out with him,” she said. “But he texted me and we hit it off." It turns out Laura had nothing to worry about as they picked up right from where they left off in preschool. The two began dating each other exclusively within two weeks. Although they attended different high schools and ventured off to colleges in different states, they stayed together. Long distance wasn't easy, but they made it work. In May 2015, Matt finally fulfilled the childhood promise he made to Laura. He brought her back to the preschool where they first met and popped the big question. Laura originally thought they were going on a celebratory picnic date to end their junior year of college. “The whole car ride to the preschool she kept asking me why I seemed anxious. I kept checking my pocket when she wasn’t looking to make sure the ring was still there,” said Matt. “I dropped down on one knee while my brother came in with the phone, snapping photos. Laura was shocked. I gave her my pitch on why I wanted her to marry me and she said yes ― whew!” The two officially tied the knot in December of 2016. It was really a fairytale romance come true.
