"The Princess Bride" Came Out 30 Years Ago And Here's What The Cast Looks Like Now

A look at what the stars have been up to since the movie's release 30 years ago. Released on Sept. 25, 1987, Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride is a unique fairytale equipped with action, romance, comedy and more. The Princess Bride seems to have it all — a star-studded cast, loveable characters and iconic moments — and is revered as a cult classic among film lovers. The film is based on the 1973 novel of the same name by William Goldman. It grossed nearly $31 million domestically ($70 million adjusted for inflation). In honor of the 30th anniversary of the film, THR takes a look at the cast of The Princess Bride — including the likes of Robin Wright, Cary Elwes and Billy Crystal — and where life has led them to their adventures in the Land of Florin. 1. Cary Elwes (Westley) In his quest to seek his fortune to be worthy of Buttercup's hand, humble farm boy Westley is captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who's got a rep for "leaving no man alive." Luckily, the pirate is so impressed with Westley's devotion to Buttercup that he not only lets him live but bequeaths him his pirating duties - thus giving Westley the power to find Buttercup again. Cary Elwes' career has had almost as many twists and turns as Westley's, with roles in dramas ("Glory," "Kiss the Girls"), spoofs ("Robin Hood: Men In Tights") and horror films ("Saw") alike. The star also worked on Disney's 3D version of "A Christmas Carol," in which Wright also provides a voice. 2. Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) Mandy Patinkin's "Princess Bride" alter ego has one of the film's most famous lines: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" The skilled swordsman is on a quest to avenge his beloved dad's death at the hands of a six-fingered man - whether he finally does is a spoiler we won't reveal. Patinkin, who's a noted singer and theater actor, has also appeared in films like "Alien Nation" and "Dick Tracy." He won an Emmy for his role on the 1990s hospital series "Chicago Hope." Currently, the star can be seen playing Saul Berenson on the Emmy Award-winning show "Homeland." The actor also had a recurring role on "Criminal Minds." 3. Robin Wright (Princess Buttercup) Robin Wright starred as Buttercup, the princess' bride of the movie's title. Her beauty charms everyone in the land of Florin, but this maiden is no damsel in distress: she's almost disturbingly skilled at pushing people down hills. Though she seems pessimistic at times, her adventures with Westley eventually convince the would-be princess that true love really does conquer all. Wright is choosy with film roles, but seems to win acclaim for nearly everything she appears in, whether as the troubled Jenny in "Forrest Gump" or a middle-aged woman on the brink in this year's "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee." She filed for divorce again from husband Sean Penn in 2009 after the couple dismissed an earlier divorce filing a year earlier. In 2011, she starred opposite Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig as journalist Erika Berger in the thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and also appeared alongside Brad Pitt in "Moneyball." 4. Carol Kane (Magical Max's wife) Carol Kane played Max's wife and assistant, Valerie, who gets a little fed up with her hubby's wisecracks: "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife. But after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be that anymore!" Kane - who's much younger than her wizened "Bride" character - has starred in "Annie Hall," "Scrooged" and "Four Christmases," among many other films. She's also known for her role as the wife of Andy Kaufman's character on "Taxi." Kane played Madame Morrible in the Broadway musical "Wicked," which she's reprised several times in other productions. For her most recent role, the actress appeared in the 2012 indie hit "Sleepwalk With Me" with Mike Birbiglia. 5. Christopher Guest (Count Tyrone Rugen) The sardonic Count Tyrone Rugen - aka The Man with Six Fingers - was played by Christopher Guest. A true villain, he's invented the torture machine that sucks away years from people's lives. Yikes! Guest is known for his hilarious, largely improvised "mockumentaries," including "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind," which he casts with the same troupe of actors. His most enduring role is metal guitarist Nigel Tufnel in the 1984 rock spoof "This is Spinal Tap"; the "band" got back together this spring for a real-life anniversary tour. On the personal front, Guest has been married to actress Jamie Lee Curtis for over 30 years. 6. Andre the Giant (Fezzik) Pro wrestler Andre the Giant played Fezzik, who's supposedly the menacing muscle for Vizzini's crew but eventually uses his vast strength and sweet nature to fight for the good guys. Andre, born in France as Andre Rene Roussimoff, was around seven feet tall and was famous in the wrestling world for his feud with Hulk Hogan in the late 1980s. Other screen credits include "Conan the Destroyer," an appearance on the "Zorro" TV series, and the movie "Trading Mom." Roussimoff died in his sleep in 1993 at the age of 46. 7. Wallace Shawn (Vizzini) Buttercup and Westley have a few other folks standing in the way of their happy ending, beginning with Humperdinck's trio of kidnappers led by Vizzini (Wallace Shawn). After capturing Buttercup, Vizzini thinks defeat is "inconceivable!", but this Sicilian's logic skills are no match for Westley's. Shawn's numerous post-"Bride" roles include the Huxtables' next-door neighbor, Jeffrey Engels, on "The Cosby Show"; strict debate teacher Mr. Hall in "Clueless"; and the voice of Rex the Green Dinosaur in "Toy Story." He also appeared as Blair Waldorf's stepfather, Cyrus Rose, on the CW's "Gossip Girl." 8. Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) Billy Crystal was transformed to play Miracle Max, who brings Westley back to life after his bout with Rugen's torture machine. Because of his grudge against Humperdinck, Max is willing to bring Westley back from the dead - well, MOSTLY dead - for less than his usual fee. Crystal was well-known before "Bride" for playing Jodie Dallas on the late '70s-early '80s sitcom "Soap" and as a cast member on "Saturday Night Live." His films include the comedy classics "When Harry Met Sally ...", "Mr. Saturday Night" and "City Slickers." His friendship with Andre the Giant, whom he met while making "The Princess Bride," inspired his 1998 movie "My Giant." 9. Peter Cook(The Impressive Clergyman) English actor, comedian, satirist and writer Peter Cook plays The Impressive Clergyman, the church official presiding over Prince Humperdinck and Buttercup's wedding. The Impressive Clergyman is most memorable for being unable to pronounce his R's correctly, making them sound more like W's instead. Cook is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern satire for his time. He died at age 57 in 1995. 10. Fred Savage(The Grandson) At just age 11, Fred Savage starred in The Princess Bride as the Grandson to whom the story is being told. Savage is an actor and director, best known for his role as Kevin Arnold in the TV series The Wonder Years. As a director, Savage has worked on many shows including Boy Meets World, That's So Raven, Drake, and Josh, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Modern Family and 2 Broke Girls. He currently stars in Netflix original series Friends From College. 11. Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck) Chris Sarandon plays the smarmy, scheming Prince Humperdinck, who swoops in to steal Buttercup's hand in marriage when she believes Westley is dead. Far from romantic, Humperdinck's desire for Buttercup is all a PR stunt: He arranges the Princess Bride's kidnapping in order to trick his subjects into waging war against a neighboring kingdom. Sneaky! Sarandon - who's the ex-husband of actress Susan Sarandon - had previously gained fame for playing Al Pacino's transsexual wife in "Dog Day Afternoon." He's also the voice of Jack Skellington in "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and has made many appearances on Broadway, most recently in "The Light in the Piazza" and "Cyrano de Bergerac."
