In Memoriam: People We Lost So Far In 2017

The world has lost too many people this year, from all walks of life. Musicians, including Glen Campbell, Greg Allman, and Tom Petty. Actors and public figures like Erin Moran, Adam West, Sir Roger Moore and Chuck Berris. And sadly, those who perished in the wakes of Hurricanes Maria, Irma, and Harvey. We are also saddened by the tragic loss of life in the Massacre in Las Vegas. As well as other tragedies that have caused loss of life both Nationally and Internationally. Lastly, we pray for those who served and continue to serve our country here and abroad. We thank you for your service. And we thank first responders who risk their lives daily to protect ours. We honor those we lost in 2017. Tom Petty Was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He was best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers but was also a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch. Petty suffered cardiac arrest the morning of October 2, 2017, and died that night at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California at age 66. Robert Yates NASCAR engine builder and former owner of the Sprint Cup Series team Yates Racing, died October 2 due to liver cancer. He was 74. Monty Hall Canadian-American game show host, producer, and philanthropist.Hall was widely known as the long-running host of Let's Make a Deal and for the puzzle named after him, the Monty Hall problem. Hall died on September 30th at age 96. Hugh Hefner Hugh Marston Hefner was an American publisher and playboy. He was best known as the editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine, which he founded in 1953, and as chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, the publishing group that operates the magazine. An advocate of sexual liberation and freedom of expression, Hefner was a political activist and philanthropist in several other causes and public issues. Hef died on September 27. He was 91. Anne Jeffreys Anne Jeffreys (born Anne Carmichael) was an American actress and singer. From 1984 to 2004, she appeared on the soap opera General Hospital (as well as its short-lived spinoff, Port Charles) in the recurring role of wealthy socialite Amanda Barrington. Jeffreys died on September 27 at age of 94. Charles Bradley Charles Bradley was an American funk, soul, and R&B singer, who called himself "the screaming eagle of soul". The Daptone soul singer died on September 23 of stomach cancer. He was 68. Liliane Bettencourt Liliane Henriette Charlotte Bettencourt was a French heiress, socialite, and businesswoman. She was one of the principal L'Oréal shareholders. She died September 21 at age 94. At the time of her death, she was the richest woman in the world (and the 14th richest person), with a net worth of US$44.3 billion, according to the 2017 version of "The World's Billionaires." Jake LaMotta Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta was an American professional boxer, former World middleweight champion, and stand-up comedian. He was portrayed by Robert De Niro in the 1980 film Raging Bull. LaMotta died on September 19 at age 95. Bernie Casey Bernard Terry Casey was an American actor, poet, and professional football player. Casey died in Los Angeles on September 19 at the age of 78. Chuck Low Charles Lewis Low was an American actor who is best known for playing Morris "Morrie" Kessler in the Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas. Low died on September 18 at age 89. Bobby "The Brain" Heenan Raymond Louis Heenan, better known as Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, was an American professional wrestling manager, wrestler, and color commentator who was frequently described as the greatest professional wrestling manager of all time. Heenan died September 17 at the age of 72 from organ failure due to complications from the throat cancer which had been in remission since 2004 Harry Dean Stanton Harry Dean Stanton was an American actor, musician, and singer. In a career that spanned more than six decades, Stanton made notable appearances in over 100 films and 50 TV episodes. Stanton died on September 15 at age 91. Frank Vincent The legendary film and television tough guy, who battled James Gandolfini and Robert De Niro in his most famous roles, died Sept. 13 at age 80. Edith Windsor Edith Windsor, the woman who brought groundbreaking same-sex marriage case to the Supreme Court, died Sept. 12th at age 88. Don Williams The 'Gentle Giant' of country music died on Sept. 8 at the age of 78. Blake Heron "'Shiloh' actor Blake Heron died at his Los Angeles home on September 8, 2017. He was 35." Troy Gentry One-half of the popular country duo, Montgomery Gentry, Troy Gentry tragically died at the age of 50 in a helicopter crash on Sept. 8 just hours before a scheduled concert in Medford, New Jersey. Walter Becker The Steely Dan co-founder died Sept. 3 at age 67. Dave Hlubek David Lawrence "Dave" Hlubek was the lead guitarist and founding member of the Southern rock band Molly Hatchet. Hlubek died of a heart attack on September 2, 2017, at the age of 66. AUGUST... Richard Anderson The actor died at his home in Beverly Hills at the age of 91 on August 31. He was best known for his role as Oscar Goldman on The Six Million Dollar Man and its spin-off, The Bionic Woman. Tobe Hooper Horror legend Tobe Hooper, who directed 1974's seminal Texas Chain Saw Massacre died on Aug. 26 at age 74. Jay Thomas Emmy-winning Murphy Brown star and Cheers actor died on Aug. 24 at age 69 after a battle with cancer. Jerry Lewis Jerry Lewis, the hilarious and hugely influential rubber-faced comedian, trailblazing filmmaker, and tireless Muscular Dystrophy fundraiser, died of natural causes Aug. 20 at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91. Dick Gregory The famed civil rights advocate and comedian died August 19 at age 84. Gregory is widely regarded as the first black comic to perform in front of white audiences. Glen Campbell The country singer and entertainer, who sold more than 50 million albums during a career that spanned over a half century, died August 8 after several years of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 81. Robert Hardy The British actor, known for his role in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small and portraying Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter films, died on August 3 at the age of 91. JULY Next... Sam Shepard The celebrated playwright and Oscar-nominated actor, who earned a Pulitzer Prize for his play Buried Child and had roles in films such as Black Hawk Down and The Right Stuff, died on July 27th at the age of 73. June Foray American voice actress who was best known as the voice of such animated characters as Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Lucifer from Disney's Cinderella, Cindy Lou Who, Jokey Smurf, Granny from the Warner Bros. cartoons directed by Friz Freleng, Grammi Gummi from Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears series, and Magica De Spell, among many others. Foray died July 26, at the age of 99, less than two months before her 100th birthday. Patti Deutsch Patricia "Patti" Deutsch Ross was a voice actress and comedian. In the 1970s, she was a frequent panelist on Match Game and Tattletales. Deutsch died on July 26, from cancer. She was 73. Leonard Landy Leonard 'Percy' Landy was an Actor best known for his work as one of the Little Rascals on “Our Gang,”. Landy died on July 26th. He was 84. John Heard The character actor, best known for playing Kevin McCallister's dad in 1990's Home Alone and for appearances on The Sopranos and numerous other television series, died July 21 at age 72. Chester Bennington Chester Bennington, the frontman of the alternative rock band Linkin Park, died in an apparent suicide. The musician was found in a private residence on the morning of July 20, what would have been the late Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell’s 53rd birthday. The Linkin Park musician performed at the funeral for Cornell, who died by suicide in May. “You have inspired me in many ways you could never have known,” Bennington wrote in part in a moving tribute shared on Twitter after Cornell’s death. Bennington was 41 and left behind a wife and six children from two marriages. George A. Romero The legendary filmmaker, known as the godfather of the zombie genre, made such classics as Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, and Creepshow, among many others. He died July 16 at age 77 after a short battle with lung cancer. Martin Landau Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood' and also had memorable co-starring roles in 'Crimes and Misdemeanors' and 'Rounders', died on July 15 at age 89. Nelsan Ellis The actor, best known for his work on the HBO series 'True Blood' and for roles on CBS' Elementary and films like 'The Help and Get On Up' died on July 8 from complications due to heart failure. He was 39. Joan Lee Lee, the wife of Marvel legend Stan Lee, died on July 6 at age 93. Marvel, home to the majority Stan's comic creations and where he was once the executive vice president and publisher, mourned Joan in a statement: "We are so saddened to hear about the loss of Joan Lee. We lost a member of the Marvel family today and our thoughts and prayers go out to Stan and his daughter Joan in this difficult time." John Blackwell Jr. Blackwell, a prolific musician who was known for his work with Prince died on July 4 at age 43. Stevie Ryan Ryan, a YouTube star who rose to fame with her Little Loca series, died by suicide on July 1 at age 33. JUNE Next... Gary DeCarlo DeCarlo, who was best known as the singer of the 1960s hit "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)", died on June 28 following a battle with cancer. He was 75. Michael Bond The creator of Paddington Bear died on June 28 at age 91 following a short illness. "He will be forever remembered for his creation of the iconic Paddington, with his duffle coat and wellington boots, which touched my own heart as a child and will live on in the hearts of future generations." Michael Nyqvist Nyqvist, who played publisher Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films, died following a battle with lung cancer on June 27th at age 56. Roger Smith Roger LaVerne Smith) was an American television and film actor, producer and screenwriter. He starred in the television detective series 77 Sunset Strip and in the comedy series Mister Roberts. Smith went on to manage the career of Ann-Margret, his wife of 50 years. Smith died June 4 at 84. Peter Sallis Peter Sallis was an English actor, known for his work on British television. He was the voice of Wallace in the Academy Award-honored Wallace and Gromit. Sallis died on June 2nd. He was 96. Prodigy The New York rapper, who along with Havoc comprised the hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, died June 20 at the age of 42. John G. Avildsen Avildsen, who won an Oscar for directing Sylvester Stallone in the original Rocky and also made Ralph Macchio a star with 'The Karate Kid' died on June 16 at age 81 following complications due to pancreatic cancer. Stephen Furst The actor, best known for playing Flounder in 'Animal House' and also for his role on '80s television classic 'St. Elsewhere' died at age 63 on June 16. Adam West West, who played 'Batman' on the campy, classic 1966-68 TV series (and in the feature film version of the show that was released in 1966 as well), died on June 9 at age 88. The Hollywood legend also provided memorable voice contributions to 'Family Guy' among other shows. Glenne Headly The Emmy-nominated actress died on June 8 at age 62. Best known for major films like 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels', 'Dick Tracy ', and 'Mr. Holland's Opus', Headly got her start on the stage as an originating member of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company. In recent years, she won acclaim for her supporting role on HBO's hit limited series 'The Night Of'. MAY... Molly Peters Molly Peters was an English actress best known for her role in the James Bond film Thunderball. Peters died on May 30th at age 75. Gregg Allman Legendary rocker Gregg Allman, known for performing in the Allman Brothers Band, died on May 27 at age 69 from complications due to liver cancer. Jared Martin Jared Martin was an American film and television actor best known for his role as Steven "Dusty" Farlow in the 1978 TV series Dallas and for roles in two science fiction TV series, The Fantastic Journey, and War of the Worlds. Martin died May 24th from pancreatic cancer. He was 75. Roger Moore Sir Roger Moore died May 23 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 89. Lisa Spoonauer Lisa Spoonauer, the actress best known for portraying Dante’s (Brian O’Halloran) high school girlfriend Caitlin Bree in 'Clerks', died on May 20 at age 44. Roger Ailes Roger Ailes, the controversial former chairman of Fox News, died May 18 at age 77. Chris Cornell Chris Cornell, the legendary frontman of Soundgarden and Audioslave, was known to possess one of the most powerful voices of the grunge era, died May 17 in Detroit while touring with his band. He was 52. His death was ruled a suicide Brad Grey Former Paramount CEO Brad Grey died May 14 following a battle with cancer. He was 59. Powers Booth Powers Boothe died May 14, in his sleep, from apparent natural causes. He was 68. Michael Parks Actor Michael Parks died May 10 at the age of 77. He was a favorite collaborator of both Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, the latter of whom broke the news of Parks’ death in an emotional post calling the actor “hands-down, the most incredible thespian I ever had the pleasure to watch perform.” Christopher “Big Black” Boykin MTV reality personality Christopher “Big Black” Boykin died May 9 from a heart attack. He was 45. Bob Wilson Bob Wilson, a local TV executive, and father to Luke and Owen Wilson died May 5th after years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. He was 75. APRIL... Jonathan Demme Filmmaker Jonathan Demme died April 26 as a result of complications from esophageal cancer. He was 73. Erin Moran Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi star Erin Moran died April 22 of stage 4 cancer. She was 56. Moran was in her early teens when she was cast on Happy Days as Joanie Cunningham, the younger sister of Ron Howard’s protagonist Richie. She played Joanie in more than 200 episodes over the course of 10 years on the beloved sitcom, as well as in the short-lived spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi, which ran for two seasons from 1982–83. Cuba Gooding Sr. Soul singer Cuba Gooding Sr. was found dead in a car on April 20. He was 72. Gooding was the lead singer of the group Main Ingredient beginning in 1971; the band’s biggest hits, 1972’s “Everybody Plays the Fool” and 1974’s “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely,” both of which were released during his tenure as the lead vocalist. The father of actors Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omar Gooding, Gooding Sr. also released two albums as a solo artist. Clifton James Character actor Clifton James died April 15 due to complications from diabetes. He was 96. Though he collected dozens of film, TV, and stage credits over the course of his long career, James was best known for his comedic role as a Louisiana Sheriff, J.W. Pepper, in the Roger Moore-starring James Bond films Live and Let Die (1973) and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). Allan Holdsworth Legendary musician Allan Holdsworth died April 15 at the age of 70. The English guitarist and composer released a dozen solo albums in addition to playing with Soft Machine, The New Tony Williams Lifetime, Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, UK, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Bill Bruford, among others. A true guitarist’s guitarist, the innovative jazz-fusion musician was admired by the likes of Eddie Van Halen, Pat Metheny, Tom Morello, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Vernon Reid. Charlie Murphy Comedian Charlie Murphy (And Brother of Eddie Murphy) died April 12 after a battle with leukemia. He was 57. Michael Ballhaus Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus died April 11 at the age of 81. J. Geils Guitarist John Warren Geils Jr., known as J. Geils, died of natural causes on April 11 at the age of 71. Geils founded the J. Geils Band in 1970. Dorothy Mengering David Letterman’s mother and frequent TV guest Dorothy Mengering died April 11 at the age of 95. Mengering, who Late Show viewers knew simply as “Dave’s mom,” contributed to her son’s top 10 lists, reported on the Olympics, and delivered segments from her kitchen at home. In 1996, she published a cookbook, Home Cookin’ with Dave’s Mom, with EW editorial director Jess Cagle. Don Rickles Legendary comedian Don Rickles died April 6 from kidney failure. He was 90. MARCH... Linda Lee Radio Host/Disc Jockey for C&W station WYCD/Detroit and Country Radio Hall of Fame inductee died on March 31 at age 55 of complications from Lung Cancer. Rosie Hamlin Singer/Songwriter who fronted the 60s group, Rosie and the Originals were best known for their single, "Angel Baby." Rosie died on March 30 at age 71 David Storey Was an English playwright, screenwriter, award-winning novelist and a professional rugby league player. He won the Booker Prize in 1976 for his novel Saville. He also won the MacMillan Fiction Award for This Sporting Life in 1960. Storey died on March 27 at age 83 Chelsea Brown Chelsea Brown was an American born actress of television and film, comedienne and dancer, who appeared as a regular performer in comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. She died March 27 at age 69 of complications from pneumonia. Clay Adler MTV alum Clay Adler died by suicide on March 26. He was 27. Best known for starring on MTV’s 2007 teen reality series Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County, Adler also made appearances in the 2009 TV movie Fish Tank and on a 2009 episode of Make It or Break It. Peter Shotton A musician who played with John Lennon & Paul McCartney in The Quarrymen. Shotton died on March 24th at age 75. Lola Albright Was an American singer and actress best known for playing the sultry singer Edie Hart, the girlfriend of private eye Peter Gunn, on all three seasons of the TV series Peter Gunn. She died on March 23 at age 92. Tomas Milian Was a Cuban American-Italian actor and singer, known for the emotional intensity and humor he brought to roles in Italian genre films. Best known as Raphael in “The Agony and the Ecstasy” (1965). Millian died on March 22 at age 84. Sib Hashian Was an American musician, best known as a drummer for the rock band Boston. Hashian was reluctantly chosen by Boston founder Tom Scholz in 1975 to replace original drummer Jim Masdea when Epic Records demanded that Masdea be replaced. Hashian died on March 22, at the age of 67, after collapsing in the middle of a set while performing on board a cruise ship. Chuck Barris Chuck was an American game show creator, producer, and host. Barris was known for hosting 'The Gong Show', and creating 'The Dating Game' and 'The Newlywed Game'. He was also a songwriter, who wrote "Palisades Park" for Freddy Cannon. Barris wrote an autobiography titled Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which was made into the film of the same name directed by George Clooney. Barris died on March 21, 2017, of natural causes at the age of 87. Colin Dexter Norman Colin Dexter, OBE was an English crime writer known for his 'Inspector Morse' series of novels, which were written between 1975 and 1999 and adapted as a television series, 'Inspector Morse'. His characters have spawned a sequel series, Lewis, and a prequel series, Endeavour. On March 21, Dexter died peacefully at his home in Oxford at age 86. David Rockefeller Banker, Patriarch of the Rockefeller family, and CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank died March 20 at age 101. Bernie Wrightson Comic book artist and illustrator Bernie Wrightson died March 19 after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 68. Chuck Berry Charles Edward Anderson Berry was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. With songs such as "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957) and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958), Berry refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive. On March 18, Berry died of apparent cardiac arrest at age 90. Lawrence Montaigne American actor, writer, dancer, and stuntman, known for his appearances on many 1960s-era television shows and films, such as "Star Trek", “The Great Escape” (1963) and “Escape to Witch Mountain” (1975). Montaigne died on March 17 at age 86. Derek Walcott Sir Derek Alton Walcott, KCSL, OBE, OCC was a poet and playwright who received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. Walcott died at his home in Cap Estate, St. Lucia, on March 17 and age 87. Tony Haygarth George Anthony David Haygarth was an English television, film and theatre actor. Haygarth died from Alzheimer's disease on March 10 at age 72. John Forgeham English actor who is probably best known for playing businessman Frank Laslett in the series Footballers' Wives. Forgeham died suddenly from internal bleeding after breaking a collarbone after falling out of bed at his home in Worthing, West Sussex on March 10. He was 75. Joni Sledge Singer-songwriter, actress, and producer, and founding member of the family R&B group, Sister Sledge, who were best known for their hits "We Are Family" and "He's The Greatest Dancer". Sledge died from natural causes on March 10, at age 60. Robert James Waller Waller was an American author best known for The Bridges of Madison County, an enormously successful book in 1993. He was also a photographer and musician. He died March 10 at age 77 and had been battling multiple myeloma. Ann Beach British Actress best remembered for her supporting role as Sonia Barrett, the quirky next-door neighbor on the British comedy Fresh Fields. Jane Freeman Shirley Ann Pithers, better known as Jane Freeman, was an English-born Welsh actress who was best known for her work on British television, mostly for her role as Ivy in Last of the Summer Wine. Freeman died in March 2017 at the age of 81 from lung cancer. Her age was often incorrectly reported as being 96 at the time of her death, but official birth records prove that she was born in 1935. Robert Osborn Robert Jolin Osborne was an American actor, film historian, television presenter, and author, best known for more than twenty years as the primary host of the cable channel Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Osborne retired from the air in early 2016 due to ill-health and missed a number of TCM annual events over the next year. Osborne died Monday, March 6th from natural causes. He was 84. Míriam Colón Míriam Colón was a pioneering Puerto Rican actress best known for appearances on various television shows from the 1960s through the 2010s, Colón was perhaps best known for her role as Mama Montana in the crime film Scarface and as Rosa in Sabrina. Colón died of complications from a pulmonary infection on March 3rd at age 80. Tommy Page Was an American singer-songwriter, best known for his 1990 hit single "I'll Be Your Everything" and was later a music industry executive. Page had three children (Owen, Alden, and Ruby) with his husband Charlie. He died on March 4 of an apparent suicide. FEBRUARY ... Joseph Wapner, Judge L.A. County Superior Court and TV show “The Peoples Court” (1981-93) America’s first reality TV judge Joseph Wapner died Feb. 26 after having been admitted to the hospital with breathing issues. He was 97 Neil Fingleton Neil Fingleton was an English actor and basketball player. He was the tallest British-born man and the tallest man in the European Union at 7 ft 7.56 in (232.6 cm) in height and among the 25 tallest men in the world. This title has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records in the summer of 2007. Fingleton appeared in “47 Ronin”, “Jupiter Ascending.” He died on February 25th at age 36. The cause of death has been reported by British media as heart failure. Bill Paxton Was an American Actor and Film Director who appeared in such films as “Aliens”, “Predator 2”, “True Lies”, “Apollo 13”, “Twister” (Just to name a few). Paxton also starred in the HBO drama series Big Love, earning three Golden Globe Award nominations during the show's run. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for portraying Randolph "Randall" McCoy in the History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys (2012). Paxton's final film appearance was in The Circle, released two months after his death. On February 25, Paxton died at the age of 61 from complications following heart surgery. Joy Hruby Joy Elaine Hruby was an Australian actress and entertainer, comedian, TV presenter and interviewer, producer, film-maker, author and celebrity agent with a career spanning more than 50 years. Best known for Joy’s World TV show. She was age 89. Larry Coryell Larry Coryell was an American Jazz Musician known as the "Godfather of Fusion". Coryell died Feb. 19 of heart failure at the age of 73. Warren Frost An American actor. His work was mainly in theater, but he worked in films and television sporadically from 1958. He is known for television roles on Matlock, The Larry Sanders Show, and Seinfeld, and particularly as Doctor Hayward on Twin Peaks, a series co-created by his son Mark Frost. Frost died at his home in Middlebury, Vermont, on February 17, following a long illness at the age of 91. George Steele Professional Wrestler better known by his ring name George "The Animal" Steele, was an American professional wrestler, school teacher, author, and actor. Steele portrayed Swedish wrestler and actor Tor Johnson in Tim Burton's film Ed Wood. On February 16, Myers died in hospital care due to kidney failure, at the age of 79. Al Jarreau Al Jarreau was an American singer and musician. He received a total of seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for over a dozen more. Jarreau is perhaps best known for his 1981 album Breakin' Away. He also sang the theme song of the late-1980s television series Moonlighting, and was among the performers on the 1985 charity song "We Are the World." On February 12, Jarreau died of respiratory failure, at the age of 76, just two days after announcing his retirement. Alice Lude A singer who entered show business after graduating from high school. Along with two other women, she formed a band called The Williams Sisters and later joined a band called The Music maids who performed in several movies, including Broadway Melody of 1940, Hit Parade of 1943 and Meet Me in St. Louis. Alice Ludes died on February 12, at age 104. Mike Ilitch Was an American entrepreneur, founder, and owner of the international fast food franchise Little Caesars Pizza. He owned the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. Ilitch died on February 10, 2017, at the age of 87. Harold Gregory "Hal" Moore, Jr. Harold Gregory "Hal" Moore, Jr. was a United States Army lieutenant general and author.
