Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the actress shared on Twitter:
“One in eight women get breast cancer,” she wrote. “Today, I’m the one.”
“The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union,” the note continues. “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal healthcare a reality.”
The Veep star, 56, received the diagnosis just one day after taking home an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series on Sept. 17, HBO says.
It was her sixth straight Emmy for lead actress in a comedy, and a history-making win: Louis-Dreyfus passed Candice Bergen and Don Knotts to score the most wins by a performer for the same role in the same show.
Veep typically airs in the spring. HBO said the diagnosis did not affect its decision to renew the political comedy for a final seventh season, and will adjust the production schedule as needed.
“Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time,” the network said in a statement. “We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep.”
