Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Where Are The Cast Now?

As hard as it is to believe, John Hughes' high school classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off premiered in the UK on this day 30 years ago. (America got it eight months earlier. Eight months.) That's three decades of failed attempts to fake your parents out with imaginary sicknesses, Ferris-style. Three decades of wincing as you remember that Ferrari driving through the window. And three decades of wondering whatever happened to Jennifer Grey. Matthew Broderick – Ferris Bueller Best known as Mr Sarah Jessica Parker these days, Broderick starred in The Cable Guy, Godzilla, Inspector Gadget and The Stepford Wives remake, as well as voicing adult Simba in a little Disney animation called The Lion King. He showed up on TV in Frasier, Modern Family and 30 Rock too. Broderick's screen work has cooled in more recent years, though he continues to work in the theatre and holds the record as the youngest winner of the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He also played himself in Trainwreck. Alan Ruck – Cameron Frye Ruck was already almost 30 by the time he played Ferris's nervous best buddy Cameron, and has admitted to going through a period where he wished he'd never appeared in the film. He's had some odd film roles in the intervening years, including Star Trek: Generations, Speed, Twister and M Night Shyamalan's infamous The Happening. He has a long list of TV guest spots, from Stargate Atlantis and Fringe to Scrubs and, recently, The Middle, but most noticeably featured in all six seasons of Spin City. Mia Sara – Sloane Peterson The Legend star played Ferris's girlfriend Sloane in the 1986 movie. She's had a few acting jobs since, with a notable appearance in Timecop and paving the way for Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in the extremely short-lived 2002 Birds of Prey series. Sara apparently claims to have 'retired' from acting, which must have freed up some time for her to make use of her private pilot's license. Jennifer Grey – Jeannie Bueller You hardly need us to tell you that Jennifer Grey followed up her supporting part as Ferris's annoying sister with her starring role in Dirty Dancing the following year, right? Her lack of subsequent major roles has famously been blamed on her nose job, although she has kept working ever since, showing up in Friends and winning Dancing with the Stars in 2010 and most recently starring in the Amazon original series Red Oaks. Lyman Ward – Tom Bueller The actor who played Ferris's dad has had a strange mix of roles since, including three different Murder She Wrote characters, a nameless secret service agent in Independence Day and a role in the pilot of Beverly Hills 90210 which was recast for the full series. He has had the best luck with further teen films, showing up in The Faculty and as a pastiche of Tom Bueller in Not Another Teen Movie. He was also married to his on-screen Ferris Bueller wife Cindy Pickett for six years. Cindy Pickett – Katie Bueller Cindy Pickett followed up her turn as Ferris's mom with a three-year stint on the cult TV series St Elsewhere. She cornered the market in crime drama guest appearances, showing up in NYPD Blue, Without a Trace, CSI: Miami and Cold Case, as well as following her ex-husband Lyman Ward into a role in an episode of Murder She Wrote. Edie McClurg – Grace Edie McClurg – who put in a show-stealing performance as a school secretary – probably has the longest list of roles of all the Ferris cast. She appeared in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Curly Sue, Natural Born Killers, The Golden Girls, Roseanne, Seinfeld, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Desperate Housewives. And she really comes into her own as a voice actor, with credits including The Little Mermaid, A Bug's Life, Cars, Wreck-it-Ralph, Frozen and, most recently, Zootropolis. Jeffrey Jones – Edward R Rooney Jones followed his role as the angry Dean of Students with a load of high-profile movies, including Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October, Ed Wood, The Devil's Advocate, Sleepy Hollow and... er... Howard the Duck. He also did a lot of voice work on animated shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Invader Zim.
