Blowin’ in the Wind – The Bee Gees on Australian Bandstand…

By Brad Rosenberg

When they were recording during this period, they had been very disappointed with their sales. This is partially because this was before there was a teenage music scene/market (The Beatle era). Purchasing records was not as common an activity in Australia, as it was in the UK, probably because radio stations were still the main source of entertainment, at the time.

But, with what followed after BEATLEMANIA, the whole industry changed, and became driven by the newly created teenage market. The BEE GEE’s were obviously well prepped for this evolution, and they recorded what was to become their first big hit – “SPICKS and SPECKS” – this was obviously a severely monumental part of the history of modern music in Australia. There is still a music quiz show on TV, named after that song.

The TV show named after the Bee Gee’s first hit.

Above is a rare video of the group when they first started, doing a cover of “Blowing in the Wind” by Bob Dylan, a folk hit that had come out a year prior.before they more or less became one of the leading fathers of the 1970s disco era.
