Daydream Believer – The Monkees (1967)

A folk singer by the name of John Stewart (and no, not from The Daily Show) wrote this iconic song. He actually wrote this song right before leaving his band The Kingston Trio (1961-1967), teaming up with John Denver- who had not made it big yet. In 1968, Stewart was branded the official musician of the Democratic party. This meant he got to travel with Senator Robert Kennedy during his Presidential campaign. To make their record label happy, The Monkees had to make one tiny change to Stewart's lyrics. The Monkees's drummer Micky Dolenz states: "As we sing it, there's a line 'Now, you know how happy I can be.' John wrote 'Now, you know how funky I can be.' But the music department refused to let us sing the word 'funky.' '' Funky's original definition means oily, and greasy, and sexy - and the group's music department felt it to be too dirty for the band's reputation. Click "Next" to read more. John Stewart passed away on January 19th, 2008. He left a "compilation of musical excellence unparalleled in his time," as written by Stewart's good friend Tom Delisle.
