- 1827 – The first nursery school in the U.S. was established in New York City.
- 1876 – Boston’s Joe Borden pitched the very first no-hitter in the history of the National League.
- 1879 – The first U.S. veterinary school was established by Iowa State University.
- 1938 – “LIFE” magazine’s cover pictured Errol Flynn as a glamour boy.
- 1979 – Due to a record company dispute, Tom Petty was forced to file for bankruptcy owing $575,000 (£338,235). A long-running battle with his record company followed.
- 1985 – It was “Aretha Franklin Appreciation Day” in the state of Michigan.
- 1992 – A statement issued by Freddie Mercury’s attorneys stated that Mercury had bequeathed the majority of his estate (£10 million – $17 million) to his long-time friend Mary Austin.
