• 1936 – Benny Goodman and his trio recorded “China Boy.”
• 1955 – Perez Prado was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White’.
• 1957 – Ricky Nelson released his first single “Teenager’s Romance” on Verve Records.
• 1959 – Buddy Holly was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the Paul Anka song ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore.’ A No.1 hit six weeks after Holly’s death.
• 1959 –  “There Goes My Baby” by the Drifters, the first song to feature new lead singer Ben E. King, was released on Atlantic Records.

• 1961 –  Ernie K-Doe rose to the top of the R&B chart with “Mother-In-Law”.
• 1961 – Bob Dylan appeared on Harry Belafonte’s album ‘The Midnight Special’ playing harmonica on the track ‘Calypso King’; Dylan was paid a $50 session fee for this his first ever recording.
• 1961 – Del Shannon started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Runaway’, also a No.1 in the UK. Del was the first person to have a hit with a Beatles song in the US with his version of ‘From Me To You.’
• 1965 – The Soundtrack to “Mary Poppins” was #1 on the Album chart for the third out of 13 weeks
• 1965 – Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Game Of Love’, a No.2 hit in the UK.
• 1967 –  Aretha Franklin released the single “Respect”.

• 1968 – The Beatles new company, Apple Records turned down the offer to sign new artist David Bowie. (Apple later signed Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston).
• 1968 – Louis Armstrong was at No.1 in the UK with the single ‘What A Wonderful World / Cabaret.’ At 69 years of age, it made Armstrong the oldest act ever to score a UK No.1.
• 1971 – Crosby Stills Nash & Young went to No.1 on the US album chart with ‘4 Way Street.’
• 1971 – Marvin Gaye’s classic “What’s Going On” held on to #1 for a fifth week on the R&B chart.
• 1971 – Three Dog Night enjoyed the second of six weeks at #1 with their classic “Joy To The World”
• 1971 – Pearl remained at #1 for Janis Joplin on the Album chart.
• 1972 – John Lennon’s controversial single, ‘Woman Is the Nigger of the World’ was released in the US. The song peaked at No.57, despite virtually every radio station in the country refusing to play it. Yoko Ono said the phrase during a magazine interview in 1967 and Lennon later explained that he was making a point that women deserved higher status in society.
• 1976 – “Come On Over”, a song written for Olivia Newton-John by the Bee Gees, topped the Adult Contemporary chart.
• 1976 – ‘Wings At The Speed Of Sound’ went to No.1 on the US album chart. Paul McCartney’s fifth No.1 album after The Beatles became his most successful American chart album, spending seven unconsecutive weeks at No.1.
• 1976 – We all do it, and on this day “Living For The Weekend” by the O’Jays was the #1 R&B song.

• 1977 – Santana and Joan Baez gave a free concert for the inmates of Soledad Prison in Salinas, California.
• 1979 – Ray Charles’ ‘Georgia On My Mind’ was proclaimed the state song of Georgia. The music to the song was written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael who also recorded a version of the song in New York in the same year. Ray Charles, a native of Georgia, recorded it in 1960 on the album The Genius Hits the Road.
• 1981 – New Order started work on their first album at Strawberry studios in Stockport, England.
• 1982 – Vangelis also ruled the Adult Contemporary chart for the fourth of five weeks in a row with “Chariots Of Fire”.
• 1982 – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts dominated the Singles chart with “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”, remaining for a sixth week at #1.
• 1989 – Richard Marx released the single “Satisfied”.
• 1989 – Tom Petty released his first solo album (away from the Heartbreakers) Full Moon Fever.
• 1989 – The State of Massachusetts declared April 24 to be “New Kids on the Block Day”.
• 1993 – Farm Aid Six took place in Ames, Iowa, led by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Ringo Starr,Neil Young and Bruce Hornsby.
• 1993 – “Love Is” by Vanessa Williams & Brian McKnight held on to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
• 1993 – Duran Duran had already made a huge comeback with “Ordinary World”, and now had their latest, “Come Undone” move from #86 to #59.

• 1993 – “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack was #1 on the Album chart for a third week
• 1995 – Oasis released ‘Some Might Say’ which went on to give the band their first UK No.1 single.

“TV/RADIO TODAY”

• 1959 – “Your Hit Parade” aired for the last time. The show had been on since 1935.
• 1992 – “Elvis — The Great Performances” aired on CBS-TV.

“OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS…”

• 1956 – Elvis Presley signed a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures that allowed him one film a year with other studios.
• 1963 – 18-year-old Brenda Lee married her husband Ronnie Shacklett.  The couple is still together.
• 1975 – Peter Ham, British singer, songwriter with Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself in the garage of his Surrey home, aged 27.
• 1976 – Paul and Linda McCartney spent the evening with John Lennon at his New York Dakota apartment and watched Saturday Night Live on TV. Producer of the show Lorne Michaels made an offer on air asking The Beatles to turn up and play three songs live. Lennon and McCartney thought about taking a cab to the studio, but decided they were too tired. This was the last time Lennon and McCartney were together.
• 1984 – Jerry Lee Lewis married his sixth wife, Kerrie McCarver.
• 1985 – RKO Home Video released six black and white film classics starring Fred Astaire.

• 1990 – The road crew for Roger Waters discovered an unexploded World War II bomb while constructing the set for The Wall concert in Potsdamer Platz, Germany.
• 1992 – David Bowie and Iman were married. The wedding was announced about a week later.
