  • 1957 – Elvis Presley had his custom built ‘Music Gates’ installed at Gracelands. The gates were designed by Abe Saucer and custom built by John Dillars Jr, of Memphis Doors inc.
  • 1956 – We were first introduced to a great new act as the first single by theCoasters–“One Kiss Led To Another” debuted on this date.
  • 1957 – Bobby Helms made his television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, singing “My Special Angel”.
  • 1958 – Connie Francis had the top U.K. song with “Carolina Moon, Stupid Cupid”.

  • 1958 – Tommy Edwards had one of the great early songs of the Rock Era with “It’s All in the Game”, which on this date reached #1 on the R&B chart.
  • 1965 – The Supremes began recording the song “I Hear a Symphony”.
  • 1965 – The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Ticket To Ride.’ Taken from the film Help! it was the group’s seventh UK No.1.
  • 1966 – ‘Wild Thing’ by The Troggs (who were originally called The Troglodytes) was released in the U.S. on both the Atco and Fontana labels. The song went on to reach No.1. Fronted by Reg Presley, ‘Wild Thing’ became a major influence on garage rock and punk rock.
  • 1969 – The Carpenters signed with A&M Records.
  • 1972 – Deep Purple scored their second UK No.1 album with Machine Head. The album which features ‘Smoke on the Water’ and ‘Highway Star’, is often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre and commercially, it was Deep Purple’s most successful album.
  • 1972 – David Bowie began his first tour of the United States.
  • 1973 – The Rolling Stones topped the album chart in the U.K. with Goat’s Head Soup.

  • 1977 – The Jam released their first single ‘In The City’, which peaked at No. 40 in the UK charts. The English punk rock/New Wave/mod revival formed in Woking, Surrey, fronted by Paul Weller, achieved 17 other Top 40 hits including four UK No.1’s.
  • 1979 – Kenny Rogers had a hot song with “You Decorated My Life”, which moved from 60 to 37.
  • 1985 – Prince released the album “Around The World In a Day.” It was his first release after “Purple Rain.”
  • 1989 – Guns N’ Roses released “Patience.”
  • 1989 – Madonna started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Like A Prayer’, the singers seventh US No.1, also a No.1 in the UK.

  • 1991 – The Dave Matthews Band played their first ever-live show when they appeared at The Earth Day festival in Charlottesville, Virginia.
  • 2001 – Destiny’s Child went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Survivor.’ Their second chart topper, they were the first US female band to have more than one UK No.1. The song won the trio a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Group.

  • 1969 – Diana Ross was a guest on the popular television show Laugh In on NBC.
  • 1969 – Three Dog Night, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, James Brown, Tom Jones, Janis Joplin, and Oliver  performed on the debut of the new weekly television show The Music Scene, which debuted on ABC.
  • 1978 – Leif Garrett dabbled in acting when he starred in dual roles on the ABC-TV show Wonder Woman.
  • 1978 – John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd made their first appearance as The Blues Brothers on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
