  • 1957 – Elvis Presley started an eight week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘All Shook Up.’ It went on to be the biggest single of 1957 selling over 2 million copies.

  • 1957 – “I’m Walkin'” from Fats Domino was #1 for a sixth week on the R&B chart.
  • 1959 – Goldband Records released ‘Puppy Love’ by a 13-year old Dolly Parton in the US, a song that was recorded two years earlier when she was just eleven years old. The song didn’t chart, (later to be a hit for Donny Osmond ).

  • 1966 – During a 12 hour session at Abbey Road studios in London The Beatles worked on a new John Lennon song ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’, and a new George Harrison song ‘Taxman’.
  • 1968 – Aretha Franklin enjoyed a third straight week at #1 on the R&B chart with “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone”.
  • 1968 – Paul Mauriat’s “Love Is Blue” was #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for the 10th week in a row.
  • 1968 – Deep Purple made their live debut at a gig in Tastrup, Denmark.
  • 1970 – Creedence Clearwater Revival released one of many classic double-sided hits:  “Up Around The Bend”…and “Run Through The Jungle”.
  • 1970 – The New York Times reported that Catholic and Protestant youth group’s had adopted The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’ as a religious symbol.
  • 1974 – MFSB and the Three Degrees started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘TSOP, (The Sound Of Philadelphia), a No.22 hit in the UK.
  • 1980 – 84 year old George Burns, who starred in the movie Oh God with John Denver, became the oldest person to have a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 when ‘I Wish I Was 18 Again’ peaked at No.49.

  • 1985 – The charity record ‘We Are The World’ by USA For Africa was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. The US artists’ answer to Band Aid had an all-star cast including Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Ray Charles, Billy Joel and Paul Simon plus the composer’s of the track, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
  • 1991 – Mariah Carey’s debut album was unshakable as the #1 album, spending an eighth week at the top.
  • 1992 – ‘A Concert For Life’ took place at Wembley Stadium as a tribute to Queen singer Freddie Mercury and for aids awareness. Acts appearing included; Elton John,Roger Daltrey, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), David Bowie, Mick Ronson, James Hetfield, George Michael, Seal, Paul Young, Annie Lennox, Lisa Stansfield, Robert Plant, Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, Axl Rose and Slash.
  • 1993 – Janet Jackson released the single “That’s The Way Love Goes”.
  • 1993 – Aerosmith released ‘Get A Grip’ their 11th studio album which became their best selling album to date with sales over 20m.
  • 1994 – Barbra Streisand resumed touring for the first time in 28 years with her first stop at the Wembley Arena in London.
  • 1996 – Alanis Morissette’s landmark album Jagged Little Pill was #1 for the ninth week.

  • 1996 – English R&B singer Mark Morrison had his first UK No.1 single when ‘Return Of The Mack’ started a two-week run at the top of the charts.1996 – Tickets went on sale for the KISS reunion tour.

“TV/RADIO TODAY”

  • 1935 – “Your Lucky Hit Parade” was first broadcast on radio. It aired for 24 years.
  • 1959 – “Desilu Playhouse” on CBS-TV presented a two-part show titled “The Untouchables.”
  • 1961 – FM stereo broadcasting was approved by the FCC.
  • 1992 – The new animated TV series Goof Troop previews on the Disney Channel

“OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS…”

  • 1916 – Chicago’s Wrigley Field held its first Cubs game with the first National League game at the ballpark. The Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in 11 innings.
  • 1940 – The First electron microscope was demonstrated by RCA.
  • 1960 – Elvis Presley’s returned to Hollywood to film “G.I. Blues.”  
  • 1968 – Apple Music ran advertisements soliciting tapes from unknown artists, offering financial grants as part of a deal to release records on the Apple label. Artists such as Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax, David Peel and Elephant’s Memory were signed up.
  • 1972 – The manned lunar module from Apollo 16 landed on the moon.

  • 1981 – John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas was given a sentence of five years in prison after pleading guilty to drug possession charges.  After he got out of jail, Phillips toured the United States telling people about the dangers of taking drugs.
  • 1985 – Phil Collins enjoyed another week at #1 on the Album chart with No Jacket Required.
  • 1990 – Janet Jackson was bestowed with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame at the start of ‘Janet Jackson week’ in Los Angeles.
  • 1992 – In London, a memorial concert was held for Freddie Mercury (Queen). Elton John, Guns N’ Roses, Roger Daltrey, Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, George Michael, Def Leppard, and Spinal Tap performed.
  • 1994 – In London, Barbra Streisand began her first tour in 28 years.
  • 1999 – Jane Seymour received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • 2013 – Black Sabbath began their first tour of Australia/New Zealand in 40 years.
