Decor Trends From The Year You Were Born

Every year has its home design claims to fame—or, in some cases, shame and, We have seen it all! There's a reason we look back at old photos... so we can be sure not to re-live those styles again! From mirrored and metallic finishes and wallpapers to curved walls and glass bricks accents to the overkill of florals and ruffles, wood paneling galore, shag carpets with shag rugs with shag bathrooms, round showers, Avocado Green and Yellow Harvest kitchens, the very multiple mixes of patterns...the list is endless. Some were hot and some were not so hot. And while some have made a comeback, some hopefully never will. What was the decor trend, when you came into this world? 1950 We love pink, but this is just a bit too frilly for our liking. 1951 Let's just say red bunting wasn't the best decor idea. 1953 While we are all for neutrals, these colors and prints together are definitely uninspiring. 1954 We think red vinyl should be limited to retro diner booths. 1955 Homes the color of pea soup was all the rage in 1955. 1956 While the look is nice, we think most people would prefer real beds over daybeds. 1957 Yellow is definitely not the most calming color for your work environment. 1958 Rococo revivals are not really the most inspired trend. 1959 Ditsy florals, especially in matching bedding and curtains, saw a resurgence this year. 1960 That walnut and green color combo definitely does not tickle our fancy. 1961 While it might be good at hiding dirt, dark brown couches in the fabric aren't our fave. Especially when you coordinate with orange throw pillows. 1962 2017 isn't the first time that greenery was on trend. 1963 There came a time when striped couches became extremely popular and no one knew why. 1964 We are definitely happy the all-green kitchen went out of style. 1965 Big florals were in every bathrobe, bed, and curtain back in the mid-sixties. 1966 White patio furniture inside? Not really our jam. 1967 While we love outrageous wallpaper, this palette is mildly headache inducing. 1968 This circular shower definitely seems claustrophobic. 1969 Those iconic orange and yellow cabinets were not one of the finest decor choices of the sixties. 1970 Red-lacquered kitchens used to be all the rage. 1971 Is this mustard tone making anyone happy? 1972 While Missoni prints are fun, they got a little bit too popular in the seventies. 1973 Unless it is a darkroom, no room has to be this red. 1974 You gotta love the '70s where you could find shag carpeting literally everywhere. 1975 Why did wall-to-wall plaid become trendy? 1976 While we love all the innovative designs around this time, some seem a bit unnecessary. 1977 Sticking with just one wallpaper choice is usually a good idea. 1978 While the idea of sunken spaces is cool, we can imagine that these designs were not the most kid-friendly. 1979 This bathroom is so '70s, but also a bit of a headache. 1980 Track lighting took all the glamour out of light fixtures. 1981 Does this opulent yuppie style remind you of anyone? 1982 Stained glass pendants were all the rage in the early '80s. 1983 Glass block walls go hand in hand with polyester tracksuits as a '80s trend that we don't want to see again. 1984 In the age of Laura Ashley, shabby chic prints were everywhere. 1985 Here's the origin of farmhouse-style prints. 1986 People call these grandma curtains for a reason. 1987 We love pastel, but not this kind of pastel. 1988 Who thought carpeted bathrooms were a good idea? 1989 Ugly pastels strike again. 1990 The '90s definitely brought in an overdone country style. 1991 Vintage frilly spaces were everywhere in the early '90s. 1992 Dark sage crept into kitchen designs and sparked a trend that was just a bit too dreary for our liking. 1993 Now, this is how to go too far on a jewel tone trend. 1994 We prefer the plaid-less styles of IKEA today. 1995 While a maximalist look is great, the mix and match style of the mid-nineties was a bit too much. 1996 While Japanese decor is great, it definitely teetered on appropriation throughout the '90s for some people. 1997 French country toile was everywhere during this decade and it wasn't necessarily the most inspired look. 1998 Once again, someone thought dark sage was a good neutral. 1999 Outdoor neutrals were brought indoors for some reason in 1999. 2000 Red and yellow floral fabrics were quite the early 2000s mainstay.
