Sunday Night Meant ‘Wonderful World of Disney’

By Kelsey Cassetta

Pajamas on, bathed, and ready for school in the morning; Sundays were my favorite school night because of the Wonderful World of Disney. I remember sitting at the dinner table on a Sunday night and reasoning with my mom: “If I get all ready for bed, can I stay up and watch the Disney movie?”

I don’t remember her ever saying no, but she definitely used it as her bargaining tool. Teeth brushed? Homework done?

And yet, it seemed there was always something I didn’t do before the movie started because nearly every commercial break I had to scurry to the bathroom and quickly brush my teeth, or pack my backpack with my folders for the following day. My sister would call, “It’s back on!” and I’d come running back because I couldn’t miss a second.

I remember my sister and I side by side on the edge of our parents’ bed. We were lying on our stomachs, chins in our hands, watching the featured movie on a television set so small, I don’t think they make the size anymore. Some of the movies I remember featured were: Annie, Cinderella, and Oliver Twist. The adaptations were an opportunity for our parents to make a point to show us the originals.

The songs were always our favorite because they stuck with us. I can still picture my mother’s face upon catching us carrying out our chores throughout the week while singing: “It’s a hard knock life for us.” (In her favor, I always mopped more vigorously at that part) Or asking for a second helping of spaghetti clutching our empty bowls and saying, “Please sir, I want some more.”

The end of the weekend was always a bummer, but Sunday nights with the Wonderful World of Disney changed that for me. My sister and I still talk about those movies. About the adaptations versus the originals. Those broadcasts and the memories surrounding them are nostalgic for me.
