Do you remember the webbed or metal lawn chairs from the ’50s, ’60s, and beyond? They seem to be coming back in the age of coronavirus. This summer, many of us are social distancing. If you have people over, you are probably sitting at least six feet apart. Obviously, lawn chairs are much easier to use to achieve social distancing than a picnic table, swing, or bench.
Lawn chairs are generally pretty inexpensive, so you can stock up on as many as you need for your next gathering! Folding chairs actually date back to ancient Egypt. However, they became more commonplace in the late 1800s. In the 1940s, the first aluminum chair with fabric webbing that you know and love was invented.
These days, it has been reported that there has been an increase in demand for these lawn chairs due to social distancing. Vintage ones are being sold on resale sites and other handmade websites like Etsy. A popular vintage brand is Junior Toy Co., originally known as Anderson and Vail Stamping Co. They are selling for around $30-50 on Etsy right now.

There are newer brands including Lawn Chair USA, started by two brothers named Mark and Gary Pokrandt in 2010. Their chairs are made just the way they used to be and come in five styles and colors. Reviews say that they are very sturdy and can even withstand a thunderstorm if you forget to put them away when you’re done using them.
How many lawn chairs do you still own? Have you been using them more in the age of coronavirus?
