A nine-year-old dog named Ginger is finally getting adopted! The labrador retriever mix has been in a shelter for about seven years. Now, Ginger has gone viral on social media and has had around 30 applications for adoption this week!
Dogwood Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that posted a photo of Ginger in her kennel on social media. The sign read, “Hi! I’m Ginger! I’ve been here waiting 7 years, 9 months, 2 weeks, 2 days. I’m a good girl! I promise! I just need a 2nd chance!”
Many other pages began to share the post about Ginger, including PawsUp, Ellen DeGeneres’ account that shares dogs available for adoption. Ginger was located in Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. It is about 3 hours from Kansas City and St. Louis and 1.5 hours from Springfield, Missouri.

The shelter has said that Ginger came to them “with her own set of medical, emotional and behavioral issues which made her unadoptable for a long time.” The shelter worked with her for a long time and now she is ready for her forever home.
After receiving over 30 applications, the shelter updated everyone on Facebook. They wrote, “Thank you for all the inquiries about Ginger. As everyone knows, we have been inundated with adoption applications about her! We are diligently reviewing them and will post an update when a decision is made. Please keep hoping with us that she will finally find the perfect home!”
Less than a day ago, the shelter updated everyone with the good news! Ginger has a new home. They wrote, “Ginger has gone home! Her adopter has no children and no pets, has a fenced-in yard and experience with dogs with dispositions similar to Ginger’s!”
They continued, “A huge thank you to Carole Nowicki for posting Ginger’s story, to Scott Poore for re-posting and to every one of you who shared it! We’re very grateful to those who cheered us on and kept the faith that Ginger would finally have the loving, comfy home she deserves!”
We are so happy to see Ginger get the home she deserves after so many years in a shelter.
