The New Years Honours 2020 list was recently leaked online. The British awards include announcements for damehood for Olivia Newton-John and knighthood for other celebrities. The list was meant to be private as it contained over 1,000 addresses for many celebrities. The list was visible online for about an hour.
The Cabinet Office released a statement apologizing for the error. It said the list was taken down as soon as possible. “We apologise to all those affected and are looking into how this happened. We have reported the matter to the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) and are contacting all those affected directly,” the Cabinet Office said.

Elton John was also affected. He was knighted in 1997 and this year will become a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to music. Olivia Newton-John will also be honored with damehood.

The New Year’s Honours began in the 19th century during Queen Victoria‘s reign. According to Reuters, the honors “aim to recognise not just well-known figures but those who have contributed to national life through often selfless and unsung contributions over many years.”
