Two incredible country music icons finally came together again to sing a duet. Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson sang Loretta’s song “Lay Me Down” together and it sounds magical. “Lay Me Down” is a track that was actually written by Loretta’s son-in-law Mark Marchetti for her 2016 album.
On the album, there were two collaborations. One was a duet with Elvis Costello by the name of “Everything It Takes” and of course, “Lay Me Down” with the great Willie Nelson. The first time that Loretta and Willie work together is in 1985 at the Farm Aid Concert. It is so nice to see them together again! They truly are two musical icons.
The song is a bit eerie as it talks about the end of life. In the song, the narrator accepts death and welcomes it in. Take a look at some of the lyrics:
“I raise my head and set my sail
In the eye of the storm and the belly of a whale
My spirit stood on solid ground
I’ll be at peace when they lay me down
When I was a child I cried
Until my needs were satisfied
My needs have grown pound for pound
I’ll be at peace when they let me down”
“When they lay me down someday
My soul will rise and fly away
This old world will turn around
I’ll be at peace when then lay me down
This life isn’t fair it seems
It’s filled with tears and broken dreams
There are no tears where I am bound
And I’ll be at peace when they lay me down”
