Watch The First Interview With Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman After Wife’s Death

Duane “Dog” Chapman is opening up in a new interview about how life is after he lost his wife, Beth. Last month, Beth lost her battle with throat cancer and passed away in the hospital. Since then, the family has had two memorial services for her; one in Colorado and one in Hawaii.

Duane opened up about how he’s doing and how he’s handling the intense grief in the interview below. He said he still puts a pillow under the covers where she used to sleep, and still believes it is her in the middle of the night.

Duane reveals the toll her death has taken on him in this interview

According to Entertainment Tonight, Duane said, “I wake up to always touch her, especially when she was sick I’d have to wake up a few times when she stopped breathing. I couldn’t hear it no more. And she’s laying and I’m like, ‘You are not dying like that. I will not let you die.’ So I’m so used to that that I don’t sleep solid anymore.”

Duane also revealed in the interview that he has lost 17 pounds in two weeks because he has no appetite. He tries to force-feed himself but feels full after a few bites. Unfortunately, loss of appetite is a common symptom of intense grief.

He also has a hard time eating because his wife would help him read menus at restaurants. Duane said he has a hard time reading menus because of the lighting in most restaurants. He needs glasses but used to rely on Beth to give him a rundown of the menu so he could order.

Duane is still obviously processing and grieving Beth’s passing, but he is using his pain to connect with others who have also lost loved ones. He said, “I went through experiences to help others — I really mean this. The other day I met [a guy]. He goes, ‘Dog, you know I love you. I’m sorry, I lost my wife six months ago,’ and I hugged him and I felt a connection like, boom, instantly brotherhood, right.”

Duane continued, “So when you go through something and somebody else [goes through the same thing], there’s something there. That’s why I’m going through it, but I use that thing that’s bad to help me help others.”
